Goldie Shockley

Goldie Leona Shockley, a Parkdale, Ore., resident, died Nov. 19, 2007, at the Hood River Care Center. She was 88 years of age.

Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center. Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 30, from 4-7 p.m., also at Anderson’s Tribute Center.

Goldie was born March 30, 1919, in Barnsdall, Okla., to Vernon and Stella Belle (Kline) Weston. Her father worked in oilfields, driving a team of horses to lift rods out of wells.

In 1920 they moved to Wynadotte, Okla. Due to her mother’s health they moved to Mesa, Ariz., for a couple of years where Goldie started school. They then moved to Turkey Ford, Okla., where she attended Union Elementary School through the ninth grade. She loved to play basketball and was on the basketball team.

A young man named Lawrence Shockley began to catch her eye and she soon fell in love. They were married on Jan. 15, 1936, in Miami, Okla. Her first child, Donald Paul, was born at their home in Turkey Ford on Oct. 20, 1936. In 1941 they moved to the Pine Grove area of Hood River Valley. Her next child, Jadean, was born in Hood River on June 9, 1941.

Her husband was foreman for several orchard owners and then went to work for Hanel Lumber Mill and retired in 1979. She worked in the orchards and then went to work for Diamond Fruit, retiring in 1984. Her husband passed away on March 4, 1982.

She was happiest when she was with her family; doing crafts, sewing and quilting with her four sisters; and working outside in her flowers and yard. She continued to live at home in Parkdale, Ore., until her stroke on Jan. 14, 2004.

She is survived by her son, Donald Shockley, and his wife, Norma; and daughter, Jadean Bailey, and her husband, Arnold; five grandchildren: Donetta Hagebusch, Gary Bailey, Debra Trygg, Scott Bailey and Jeanne Hux; 10 great-grandchildren: DJ Hagebusch, Kaci Bailey, Crystal Bailey, Jonette Bryant, Michael Trygg, Samuel Bailey, James Bailey, Bryan Trygg, Janell Bailey and Malcolm Cantrell; five great-great-grandchildren: Lukas Bailey-Kostelec, Carter Hagebusch, Baileyanne Shaffer, Noah Hagebusch and Asthen Bailey-Kostelec and one sister, Zelma Cunningham.

Goldie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence; two brothers, Vernie and Lawrence Weston; and three sisters, Ada Miller, Ida Belle Cunningham and Ruth Thomas.

Interment will be at Pine Grove Butte Cemetery.

Iva ‘Judy’ Kortge

Iva “Judy” Judith Kortge, 92, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., passed away at her home on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007.

She was born in Alcester, S.D. on Jan. 13, 1915, the youngest of five children to Evar and Julia (Engholm) Johnson. She grew up in Long Beach, Calif., where she graduated from high school and attended Long Beach Junior College.

Judy married Gary R. Kortge on Sept. 22, 1940. They resided in The Dalles and have farmed wheat since 1941. She was the owner of The Country Carousel in Hood River. She was a volunteer for many years with Hospice of the Gorge and Red Cross of Oregon, willing to give a helpful hand to the community. She enjoyed being with her family and friends, cross stitching, and traveling.

She is survived by her children, Julie Testa, K.C. Kortge and Linnie Sohler; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Kortge; her parents and her four siblings.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in The Dalles with Rt. Rev. Rusty Kimsey officiating. Private burial of cremains will be held at IOOF Cemetery on 18th Street.

Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-Quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
