James A. Mohr

James A. Mohr, 82, of Florence, Ore., passed away Nov. 30, 2007. He was born Sept. 26, 1925, in Hood River, Ore., and had lived in the area for many years.

James was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Corps, and is a graduate of Oregon State University, earning his bachelor’s degree in game biology. He was for many years a game biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. He truly loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved duck hunting and playing cards with friends and taking long walks on the beach.

James worked for many years as the produce manager for Safeway.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Robert Pearson, of Vancouver, Wash., and many other relatives and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alf and Margaret Mohr; brothers Edward and Bud Mohr and sisters Margaret Furrow, Florence Brewer and Mary Wendling. He will be greatly missed by many relatives and close friends.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Our Lady of the Dunes in Florence, Ore., with interment committal held on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Hood River at 1 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Burns Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in James’ memory.

James Martz

James Alan “Jim” Martz was born on Nov. 29, 1930, to Cal and Roxie (Boles) Martz at Hood River Memorial Hospital in Hood River, Ore. Jim’s final day in Hood River was what he would have considered his “perfect day.”

On Dec. 1, 2007, he started off with a day of gambling at Kah-nee-ta while listening to the OSU/Oregon Civil War game on the bus ride. Jim finished his “perfect day” with his journey to reunite with his wife in Heaven.

Jim met the love of his life, Berles Ackerman, at Odell High School in 1949. They married after he returned from serving his country in the Korean War on Sept. 5, 1953.

Jim was educated in Hood River County Schools. After serving in the Army, he was employed by Tracy and Company, KIHR Radio, Byers Motor Company, the Rialto Theater and Northwest Auto Parts. Jim retired in 1989 and he and Berles enjoyed traveling, RVing, and taking cruises.

Jim and Berles celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2003. Jim loved to travel and spend time at the Elks Club where he was a member for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Masons and of the American Legion of Hood River.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Berles, in April 2005; his brother, Blaine Martz; sister, Jewel Cantrell; and his parents.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Deb Martz Moody, and her husband, Hugh Moody, of Olympia, Wash., son Rick Martz, and his wife, Terri, of Hood River, son Randie Martz, of Medford, and Steve Hokana, of Olympia, Wash., who Jim commonly referred to as his adoptive son.

Jim is also survived by four grandchildren: David and Julie Martz, of Hood River, Ashley Martz, of Grants Pass, and Grant Moody, of Olympia. He is also survived by his nephew, Barry Cantrell, and his wife, Alice, of Hood River; along with many other nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center in Hood River. A reception will follow.

Hilda Hill Silagi

Longtime Hood River resident Hilda (Hill) Silagi passed away at the age of 84 on Dec. 1, 2007, in Chandler, Ariz., where she had been living for the past few years. Hilda was a devoted wife and mother, an avid golfer, Navy veteran and a good friend to many.

Hilda is survived by her twin sister, Wilda (Hill) Goe; daughters Penny Zega and her husband, Ron, Sally Schultz and her husband, Bob, and Cathy Moon and her husband, Chuck; and son, John Silagi and his wife, Jan. Hilda was proud of her six grandchildren: Megan Lablin, JD Hardman, Robert and Jonathan Schultz and his wife, Jennifer, Kevin Silagi and Elizabeth Moon; and two great-grandchildren, Alyson and William Lablin.

Hilda was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 25 years, Joe Silagi; brothers Kenny and Webb Hill and sister, Ruth Skalberg.

Hilda was born on July 28, 1923, in Wapinitia, Ore., to Alma and Nathan Hill, living her first 10 years in Warm Springs before the family moved to a farm near Pine Grove. Hilda attended Hood River High School and graduated in 1941.

Too young to enlist in World War II she worked at the Portland shipyards and played semi-pro softball. When of age, she enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and repaired airplanes in Alameda, Calif., as a Machinist Mate. Hilda was always very proud of her service to her country during the war.

After the war Hilda returned to Hood River and was employed at Mayflower Milk Company, where she met the love of her life, Joe Silagi, when he came in to pay his milk bill. (Hilda said that she never stopped taking Joe’s money.) Hilda and Joe married in 1949 and began an adventurous family life together. They loved hunting, camping, fishing, playing cards and visiting.

Hilda was proud of her years of service on the Hood River City Planning Commission, the Diamond Fruit Credit Union Credit Committee and volunteer work with her children’s many activities. Some of Hilda’s greatest joys after retirement were watching girls softball games with her sister, Wilda, and their travels with the Senior Center tours, traveling across the country to play golf with other women veterans in a tournament known as the Women’s Ruptured Duck, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River. Viewing with refreshments will be Friday, Dec. 7, from 3-6 p.m. at Anderson’s. Interment and graveside service will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.

Henry Hurtt

Henry Barkley Hurtt was born Oct. 1, 1915, to Howard and Lilia Hurtt in Baltimore, Md. He graduated from Baltimore City College and Maryland Art Institute then went to work for Fuld Brothers Advertising agency as a copy writer and advertising artist.

He enlisted in the Army in 1938 and served in Europe and Africa during WWII. He was stationed at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland, where he met WAC Sgt. Mary Panciera, whom he married in 1945. They remained married for 62 years.

After Henry’s Army tour, the couple moved to California where Henry worked for Lockheed Aircraft as a technical illustrator. He joined the Air Force in 1948 and they moved back to Maryland, where he continued to work as a graphic artist. His military career took him to Korea, Nebraska, Texas, and finally back to California, where he retired after 20 years of service for the Air Force. After retirement he worked as a Civil Servant for the Army Aviation Systems Test Activity at Edwards Air Force Base and for Rocketdyne Space Engines Division. His last employment was as a graphic artist at Antelope Valley Community College in Lancaster, Calif. He and Mary retired to Texas and then to Oregon.

Henry was an instinctive showman. He was well known for his harmonica talent and his contagious wit, which he shared freely with all. He was a cartoonist, photographer and avid traveler. He was a poet, storyteller and naturalist; a voracious reader, a teacher and lifelong learner.

He passed away peacefully at Hood River Care Center on Nov. 30, 2007.

His mother and father, sisters Francis Hopkins and Martha Schaffer, precede him in death. He is survived by his wife, Mary; sister, Ann Bell; son, Howard; daughters Jerry Ann Ham and Eva Bryant; and grandchildren Isaac and Eleanor Hurtt, Nathan and Adam Lapierre, Eric Houck, Jennifer Baker and James Ham.

A celebration of Henry’s life will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 19 at Western Antique Automobile and Airplane Museum. Henry’s family cordially invites friends and acquaintances to join them in honoring his talents, accomplishments, and gracious humanity. Private interment with military honors preceding will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery.
