Mahurin runs for Parks & Rec

May 9, 2007

Due to an inadvertent error, two candidates were left off the candidate’s statements for Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation that ran in the May 5 edition. Four candidates are running for three positions. They include Judy Nelson and Art Carroll’s, whose answers were printed May 5. Ross Brown is the third candidate and Glenna Mahurin is the fourth.

Here is Mahurin’s response to three questions asked by the News.

Describe your background and interest in the position.

What do you hope to accomplish in this position?

What do you see as the challenges and opportunities for this board or commission?

Glenna Mahurin

I have served on the Board of Directors for the Parks and Recreation District for 5 years: one appointed and four after I ran for the position. I felt a special kinship for this board as I was for several years a certified swim instructor and Emergency Medical Technician with the local ambulance company in Sherman County before moving to Hood River.

Through our very skillful Director and qualified staff I have been involved in many worthwhile projects while serving on the Board. Phases one and three of the Indian Creek Trail have been completed and we are beginning work on phases two and four. Our goal is to build a connecting trail throughout Hood River which will enable our patrons to hike and bike in a safe manner.

We have made numerous improvements at the Jaymar Skate Park, which make it enjoyable not only for the skaters but for parents and children who wish to use the park.

The District is developing a disc golf course at Morrison Park which we hope will be utilized by even more patrons in the county.

We maintain several parks within the district and collaborate with developers to ensure that open space is considered during the planning process.

And, of course, the swim facilities run smoothly and energy efficiently throughout this process. We are always seeking new projects which will serve the recreational interests of our patrons and methods to finance development and maintenance for those projects.

It has been my privilege to serve on a cohesive, energetic board which serves the recreational needs of Hood River County.

Thank you for your support.
