'Sicko' opens with locals

Michael Moore’s latest documentary, “Sicko,” comes to Skylight Theatre in Hood River Friday.

Featured in one of the opening segments is a local man, Rick de la Tour, who was uninsured when he accidentally lost the ends of two fingers in a table saw accident about three years ago. After learning what it would cost to reattach both fingers, de la Tour and his wife, Shatoiya, decided to have only one reattached.

The couple was flown to Hollywood last week for the film’s premier and were treated like celebrities, complete with limo and red carpet.

“I felt like Brangelina,” Rick said.

“Originally we weren’t going to pursue any publicity out of this — I would rather not be famous for being a knucklehead,” he said. “But after seeing it I decided I really want people to see this film.”

The documentary probes the American health care system, with special focus on the health insurance industry, and compares it to systems in Canada and elsewhere.
