In
cooperation with the Hood River Crag Rats Mountain Rescue Organization,
the Hood River Ranger District of the Mt. Hood National Forest will once
again host interpretive tours of the historic Cloud Cap Inn.
Beginning July 8, and on Sundays
throughout the remainder of the summer, people will have an opportunity to
tour the Inn, discover its unique history, and enjoy the surrounding
majesty of Mount Hood.
The Inn provides incredible views
and access to the adjacent Mt. Hood Wilderness. In order to provide for a
quality historical presentation, each tour will be limited to 12 people on
a reservation basis.
Limiting tour size also helps the
Crag Rats achieve their stewardship responsibilities and mission. People
may reserve a spot on a tour by calling the Hood River Ranger District
Information Desk at (541) 352-6002.
Cloud Cap Inn originally served as
an elite mountain retreat, and for the last 100 years has been part of the
uniquely exceptional destinations on Mount Hood. Listed on the National
Register of Historic Places, Cloud Cap Inn now serves as a search and
rescue base for the Hood River Crag Rats (the oldest search and rescue
organization in the United States).
The Hood River Crag Rats began
caring for the structure under a special use permit from the Forest
Service in 1952. This historic building has weathered years of extreme
winters and mountain storms, requiring extensive restoration of the
structure.
Restoration of about two thirds of
the structure has been completed during the last decade. Reconstruction of
the remaining third is scheduled to begin this summer.

tour, contact the Hood River Ranger District information desk at (541)
