News staff writerEdmund J. Campbell,
50, of Boring, Ore., jumped from the center of the Bridge of the
Gods at Cascade Locks near noon on Sunday.
Despite several hours of searching the Columbia
River and its banks, Cascade Locks Fire Chief Jeff Pricher said
crews were unable to locate Campbell.
The Boring resident reportedly stopped his car
on the bridge near the center of the river, which also marks the
state line between Oregon and Washington. According to Oregon
State Police citing an eyewitness report, he got out and walked
across the southbound lane to jump over the guardrail into the
river, approximately 145 feet below.
The same report cites that he did not hesitate
before jumping. Campbell left a note and personal identification
in his vehicle.
The Cascade Locks Fire Department was joined in
its search by Oregon State Police, Skamania County Sheriff’s
office and the Hood River County Sheriff’s office.
The Oregon Department of Transportation also
responded and one lane on the bridge was closed until 1 p.m.
when the car was removed.
