The Hood River City Planning Commission will review Bob
Naito’s plans on Monday to site 42 apartments on the 5.29 acres that
formerly housed Nichols Boat Works.
Public comment will be taken on the multi-family
proposal for the waterfront at 5:30 p.m. March 17 in the municipal
courtroom, 211 Second St.
The apartment complex proposed by Naito for the boat
basin will have 85 parking spaces. The property was rezoned in 2006 from
industrial to commercial, which allows for residential use.
Naito has requested a permit from the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers to construct two beaches along the basin for use by the
occupants.
His original site plan led the Oregon Department of Transportation to
recommend the installation of a traffic signal at Second and Oak streets
in downtown Hood River. However, that requirement could be reconsidered
since the amount of vehicles traveling to and from the apartment complex
could be lower than originally expected. Naito is no longer asking for a
hotel and restaurant to share the property.
