Death hits the hearts of hundreds

By ADAM LAPIERRE

Snow and roses, notes written by loved ones and a laminated photo of Christina Bockius, smiling into the wind, rest at Hood River’s waterfront park, in a makeshift memorial fading slowly into the cold white building up around it.

Bockius passed away on Friday at OHSU in Portland from injuries she suffered in a kiteboarding accident near La Ventana, Mexico.

The 43-year-old Hood River resident left town on Dec. 5 for a kiteboarding vacation in southern Baja, and less than a week later she was flown to OHSU by a med-evac airplane.

Although nobody witnessed the accident on Dec. 9, those who were around reported that the wind was getting gusty and something happened before Bockius was able to land her kite. Once friends were able to reach her, she had been dragged on the beach and suffered a badly broken neck.

The remote location of La Ventana meant that the closest modern medical facilities were an hour away in the city of La Paz. A friend gave Bockius CPR until they reached a hospital. Bockius’ family arranged for a medically-equipped plane and staff to fly her from La Paz to Portland on Wednesday.

Bockius never regained consciousness, and on Dec. 12 she passed away.
