Businesses report increased sales, feel the pinch of limited supplies

Place 600 snow shovels end to end and what do you get?

Plenty of sales.

Not only the weather has been brisk in Hood River County.

“Nonstop swamped since Thursday,” is how Pepi Gerald described activity at Second Wind in Hood River.

Winter weather equipment and supplies are tough to come by in Hood River County since the storm hit last week.

Hood River Supply in Hood River and Odell has sold 600 snow shovels in the past week, and six tons of ice melt.

“We’re running out of everything and anything having to do with heating and snow removal,” General Manager Pat McAllister said.

“Everything has been reordered but the biggest obstacle is getting it back in the store,” he said. “If it’s from the west, no chance.”

Many businesses are stymied by the stoppage of goods due to the closure of Interstate 84 for the past three days.

Snowblowers, ice melt, shovels, heat tape, all are either sold out or close to it at stores including McIsaac’s in Parkdale, according to hardware manager Rick Cain.

“We went sledding at Little John Sunday — oh, that’s right, we’re out of sleds,” Cain said.
