County
has prevailed in a bad faith bargaining complaint that was filed
earlier this year against the union that represents 52
administrative employees.
The county has also been held harmless in an unfair labor
practices complaint leveled by the same union. That charge was
made on behalf of 26 employees in the public works, forestry and
building departments.
“In my opinion, these rulings clearly vindicate the county
commissioners and the county administrator, all of whom worked so
diligently to reach fair contracts with the union,” said Bruce
Bischof, county counsel on labor issues.
Jason Weyand, attorney for Council 75 of the American Federation
of State, County and Municipal Employees, said the decisions by
two separate administrative law judges have been appealed. He said
both oral and written arguments will now be considered by the
state’s three-member Employment Relations Board.
“We believe these decisions were fundamentally flawed and will be
overturned in the union’s favor,” said Weyand.
Because of the legal issues involved, he declined to provide
specific information about the union’s disagreement with the
recent rulings.
