Book Stop hosts author of acclaimed and controversial book

Freedom to read has been the philosophy at the Book Stop since owners Cynthia and Charley Christensen opened their store in 2004.

The store observes Banned Book Week each September and regularly presents lists of books that have been banned.

The Christensens sell books but also promote the reading of books, the freedom to read, and protection of the right to choose what to read.

In keeping with this philosophy, Book Stop will hold a book reading, signing and discussion with Sherry Jones, author of the critically acclaimed — and highly controversial — “The Jewel of Medina.”

“The Jewel of Medina” (Beaufort Books) is a historical novel which tells of the life of A’isha, considered the favorite wife of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. The novel tells Aisha’s story from the age of 6, when she was betrothed to Muhammad, to his death. It is the first in a proposed trilogy about A’isha and her life with Muhammad.

The manuscript changed hands from one publisher to another after charges emerged that it belittled Islam. The bombing of a London publisher’s office is believed connected to the publication of the book.
