March 19 is deadline to file for May ballot

With one week to go until the deadline, just two new names are on the May 19 ballot list for open positions with the largest public agencies in the county.

Kathy Watson, the incumbent in Position 3 on the Hood River Port Commission, was the first incumbent to file for re-election, in this case a four-year term.

Meanwhile, Rich McBride filed for Position 2 on the Port Commission. Incumbent Don Hosford has announced he will not seek re-election.

Hood River County School District also has a new candidate: Jennifer Casella filed for the District 4 position, held by Mike Oates, who has not yet filed.

School board incumbents Jeff Kopecky (Position 2), Mark Johnson (Position 6) and Jan Veldhuisen Virk (at large) have filed for re-election.

There have been no filings yet for Hood River Port Position 1, now held by Fred Duckwall.

No one has yet filed for the four-year positions on the Port of Cascade Locks Commission.

Currently in office are Marva Janik, Position 4, and Joeinne Caldwell, Position 5.

The May 19 election affects positions on the boards or committees of special taxation districts throughout Hood River County. Most positions carry four-year terms.

Numerous school Local Committees (two-year terms) have positions open; all schools have positions available. These residents have filed as of Thursday:

Pine Grove Position 3, Robert Willis;

Parkdale Position 3, Shawn Summersett;

Westside Position 1 Ann Schlemmer;

Hood River Valley High School Position 2, Karyn Lloyd;

Hood River Middle School Position 2, Christopher Van Tilburg;

Mid Valley Position 1, Shawnie Emmons;

May Street Position 2, Socorro Quezada.

Parkdale Fire District: Paul Zastrow, Jason Wilkins, both at-large.

Pine Grove Fire District: Craig Sheppard (Position 1), Viktor VanKoten (Position 2)

West Side Fire District: Bob Nickelsen (Position 1), John Brennan (Position 4, two years unexpired)

Ice Fountain Water District: Terry Benton (Position 1), Gene Baskins (Position 2)

Hood River County Parks and Recreation District: Mark Zanmiller (Position 1), Position 2, no filings.

Hood River County Transportation District: Paula Friedman, Position 1, John Phillips, Position 2.

No filings as of Thursday:

Odell Sewer District: positions 1 and 2

Crystal Springs Water District, positions 2 and 3.

Odell Fire District, positions 1 and 2

Parkdale Sanitary District, positions 1, 2, 3.

Two more dates to remember:

April 28 is the final day to register to vote..

Ballots will be mailed May 1 and should arrive by May 3.
