Sternwheeler Days kick off Saturday morning
By KIRBY NEUMANN-REA News editor
New to Cascade Locks Sternwheeler Days this year will be a parade
of yachts, and vendors will be inside the pavilion at
Marine
Park.
The fun begins Saturday at
11 a.m.
with the parade down
WaNaPa Street.
Grand marshal will be longtime Cascade Locks businessman Gene
Miller, who served as mayor and city council member.
“He is loved by a lot of people in Cascade Locks,” said Marti
Pennington, who coordinates the Lions-sponsored festival.
Members of Columbia Gorge Yacht Club will parade their vessels
starting at
noon
from Bridge of the Gods to the marina.
Vendors will move inside the park pavilion his year, and bingo and
other events shift to tents outside. Food and crafts vendors will
be on hand both days.
“We’re going to experiment with this because many vendors wouldn’t
come because they were outside,” Pennington said.
Bingo in the tents will be from
noon
to dark Saturday and
11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
on Sunday. Winners split the pots with the Lions Scholarship Fund.
The Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler will be present, of course. Lions
will hold drawings every two hours for two tickets to ride the
boat.
Mountain Men will bring their encampment to
Thunder
Island
all day both days, showing their pioneer skills and lore.
Music in the park will be by Cathy Boyle and Phoenix Rising on
Saturday from
12:30
to
6 p.m.
and Perfect Bedlam Sunday from
noon
to
5 p.m.
Ducky Day races happen at
3 p.m.
Saturday. Buy a duck as a way to win donated prizes; proceeds go
to the
Cascade
Locks
Charter
School
organization.
Also scheduled is a cake walk at the park, 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday.
The Saturday family dance starts at 8 p.m. in the city mall on
WaNaPa next to Columbia Market, sponsored by the Parks and
Recreation Department.
Sunday church in the park will start at 9:30 a.m., led by the
Bagge family of Mosier.
Anyone interested in joining the Sternwheeler Days parade should
gather by 10 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Cascade
Locks’ Charburger Restaurant.
