The playoff hopes for the Hood River Valley football team hit a
crash stop Friday night in Hood River when the Central Catholic
Rams rolled over HRV 37-6.
The Eagles still could have made the playoffs with a little
help from the Barlow Bruins, but they didn’t get it.
David Douglas beat Barlow 42-14, giving the Scots the fourth
spot and the Mount Hood Conference standings, and giving Barlow
the fifth spot, which the Bruins received via a head-to-head tie
breaker over Hood River Valley.
The Eagles emptied out their bag of tricks to try and get to
the Rams, and many of them worked including two fake punts and a
statue of liberty play, but in the end the Rams were just too
athletic to be stopped.
The Rams got on the board with 2:30 to play in the first
quarter when Jordan Perry hit Brendan Scarlett from 18 yards out
on swinging-gate style trick play for the touchdown of the game.
The Rams then added four rushing touchdowns, including two by
Perry on option keeper before the half for a 28-0 lead.
They would get another touchdown pass from Perry, this time
to Bryson Koch and a field goal from Mitch Seeley to compete
their scoring output.
HRV got a fourth quarter touchdown run from Robert Wymore
for the Eagles only score of the game.
The loss finished the Eagles most successful season in their
four years back in the Mount Hood Conference. When they next
take the field, they will part of the new Columbia River League.
“Going against 5A schools will be nice, but we were a field
goal away from being in fourth place in this league,” HRV coach
Caleb Sperry said. “That shows we can play.”
