A Madras man and his daughter died from
injuries sustained Saturday morning in an two-car accident on
Highway 35, about five miles north of Mt. Hood Meadows.
Emmanuel Torres, 23, was pronounced dead at
the scene of the fatal crash that occurred about 10:30 a.m. on
Nov. 14. His child, Letticia Yasmin Torres, 6, died Sunday night
at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. She had been transported
to the medical center via LifeFlight for treatment of injuries
sustained in the wreck.
Eight other people were injured in the
collision after Justin W. O’Neal, 16, of Battleground, Wash.,
reportedly lost control of the 1992 GMC Yukon that he was
driving southbound on Highway 35. He was accompanied by two
other teenagers, Josh D. Muonio, 16, and Justin T. David, 15,
from Battleground.
Oregon State Police Sergeant Julie Wilcox
reported on Saturday that the Yukon was attempting to pass
another vehicle when it veered into the path of a northbound
Jeep Cherokee driven by Torres and occupied by five passengers.
Although Torres attempted to maneuver out of
the way, his vehicle was struck by the Yukon in the driver’s
side. Wilcox said that after the impact, the Jeep came to a stop
in the ditch along the highway.
Two adult females and three children from the
Jeep were injured, along with the three males in the Yukon.
OSP troopers from The Dalles’ office were
assisted at the scene by the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office,
Parkdale Fire Department and Oregon Department of
Transportation. Highway 35 was closed to traffic for about two
hours following the wreck.
Marjean L. Alonso, 23, from Madras, and
Antonia L. Alonso, 27, from Warm Springs, were transported to
Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening
injuries.
Alonso’s son, Isaac L. Reynoso, 11, was
transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health and Science
University with serious injuries.
LifeFlight also transported Emmanuel’s son,
Jose D. Torres, to Legacy with serious injuries.
O’Neal was first transported to Providence
and then taken by LifeFlight to OHSU. Also taken to Providence
by ambulance were Muonio and David. Both teens were given
medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries.
OSP troopers are continuing the investigation
into the accident.
