Nelson’s death
ruled an accident

Hood River Police have ruled Janet Nelson’s death an accident.

The Hood River woman died last week while windsurfing in the Columbia River near Mosier. Detective Anthony Frasier said the cause of death was ruled accidental due to blunt trauma force to the head.

“It was not a rock; there is no evidence of that. It’s possible she got her head caught between the board and mast,” Frasier said.

He said they don’t know exactly how the accident happened since there were no witnesses but that it was “mechanical” in nature.

Frasier said drowning was ruled out as a cause after Nelson’s family ordered a private autopsy. Since the accident occurred in Wasco County, their medical examiner Peter Peruzzo did the autopsy. Hood River investigated the death since Nelson was pronounced dead at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.
