Plein air artists from throughout the Pacific Northwest set up easels at sites throughout the Hood River Valley in August as part of a series of plein air (French for “plain air”) art events sponsored by Columbia Art Gallery.

A month-long exhibition featuring paintings done during the week-long “Paint Out” opens on Sept. 7 at Hood River’s First Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Columbia Art Gallery at 215 Cascade St.

It is an opportunity to meet the artists and juror and talk with them about their work. Previous year pieces sold in the range of $400 to $5,000.

A collection of the Northwest’s best plein air artists will be participating in this year’s juried completion. Many of the artists are highly collected and represented throughout the Pacific Northwest and in galleries across the nation.

In addition, noted Hood River artist Eric Jacobsen will present a two-day plein air workshop in the Gorge Sept. 8-9 for $125. To register, call 386-8877. Artists and the public are invited to meet Jacobsen when the show opens on Friday evening.

Susan Diehl, an artist in the Russian impressionist style, is grounded in the basics of drawing and painting with a strong understanding of color relationships. Diehl lives in Arizona and shows at galleries throughout the country.
