Pear time:
Fruit Loop Celebration returns this weekend

Pears are ready for picking
throughout the Hood River Valley.

September 19, 2007

The Hood River Pear Celebration comes Sept. 22-23 to the Hood River Valley Fruit Loop.

Fruit stands and attractions all along Hood River Valley Fruit Loop celebrate when pear harvest arrives.

Pear lovers will find all sorts of fine food and country fun along the Loop. More than 18 different varieties of pears will be available.

Highlights include:

• Pear Party at Rasmussen Farms in Pine Grove, now in its 14th year. Enjoy live music each afternoon; wine tasting, all kinds of pears, pear pie, pear treats, free recipes, and the very popular Corn Maze. This year’s theme is “Jack and The Beanstalk.”

• Apple Valley, on Tucker Road, is “Barbecue Central.” Enjoy the old-fashioned country barbecue featuring cherry-wood smoked ribs, pulled pork sandwiches or chicken served with Apple Valley’s homemade pear coleslaw and apple cider baked beans.

• “Desserts Galore!” at Kiyokawa Family Orchards in Parkdale. The family is teaming up with some of the area’s best creative bakers to prepare a mouthwatering selection of apple, peach — and pear — desserts using fruit from the Kiyokawa orchards.

• Visit Hood River Lavender Farms for delicious orchard-pear lavender scones topped with organic lavender honey. Discover extra large d’Anjou pears for sale, and lavender vinegar, oils, honey, and other products.

• Help celebrate the season’s crop of beautiful baby alpacas at the Alpaca Fiesta at Good Fortune Farms Alpacas, with fiber arts demonstrations, the “Name That Alpaca” game, and a “cute cria” (baby alpaca) photo contest. Shop for special deals at Goodness! alpaca boutique.

• Foothills Yarn & Fiber invites all to meet Leigh Radford, author of AlterKnits, a work encouraging knitters to enjoy experimentation, and to see the possibilities of knitting with broader vision, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

• Drop by the Draper Girls’ Farm in Mt. Hood to visit friendly farm animals and savor delicious non-pasteurized cider and blends, including pear, apple, pear-cherry, and pear-apple. Enjoy free samples, and pick pears or apples.

• Sample many wonderful varieties of pears at Pearl’s Place, near Pine Grove, all grown on the family farm.

• Harvest your own box of pears in the you-pick orchard at Alice’s Orchard and Fruit Stand on Orchard Road. Find pear recipes, activity books, free Gator rides and other family fun. Sept. 22 only, they’re offering an old-fashioned barbecue lunch.

• The Fruit Company in Pine Grove offers gift-packing facility tours, on Sept. 22 only, though the business is open both days. Find gourmet goodies including fresh pears and other fruit, cider, chocolate-covered pears, and cheeses.

Farms and attractions along the Fruit Loop are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (wineries at 11 a.m.), and charge no admission. For details visit www.hoodriverfruitloop.com.
