Veterans Day will be
observed on Sunday at the Hood River Armory instead of Overlook
Memorial Park.
The United Veterans
Council, which organizes the annual event, changed the setting
to protect people from colder fall weather.
“The venue for the
ceremony has changed in hopes of giving more people the
opportunity to attend. There will now be ample seating available
and no raincoats or umbrellas will be necessary,” said Patrick
Scranton, the county’s veteran service officer.
The armory is located at
1590 12th St.; the ceremony begins at 11 a.m. A shuttle bus will
carry riders to the National Guard post from the Elks Lodge at
Third and Cascade Avenue where a special breakfast will be
served from 8-11 a.m.
The morning meal is
being offered as a joint venture of the Elks and the American
Legion. All veterans will receive a complimentary breakfast and
other attendees will be charged $7. Proceeds, and drawings for
holiday gift items, will be used to benefit area veteran
programs.
Retired National Guard Sgt. Leroy Himes
will act as master of ceremonies on Nov. 11. The keynote speaker
will be decorated veteran Will Carey, a former Army captain. He
was critically wounded in the Tet Offensive in Vietnam.
