FOR KIDS

Through Feb. 29 — Hood River Hobbies’ “Top Model” contest entries accepted, including plastic, wood or metal models; the approximate mass of a shoebox; static, kinetic or mechanical/robotic models accepted. The models will be on display in the store window; customers will vote on their favorite. Prizes will be awarded to the top picks on Feb. 29. Through Feb. 24 — Utopia: A City of Imagination, a participatory city-building project for all ages at the White Salmon Valley Community Library, 77 N.E. Wauna Ave. Help create a city from recycled materials and found objects that will be on display in the library. Some materials available; feel free to bring in other fun, recycled objects. There will be open building times Tuesdays through Fridays from 2-4 p.m.

March 2 — Dr. Seuss’ “Horton Hears a Who,” movie, 6 p.m. in the May Street Elementary gym, presented by the May Street PTO. Admission is $1 per person (over age 2); parents must attend with their children (parents of May Street students may drop their child off for $5 per child; parents must sign kids in and out of movie and return promptly at 7:30 p.m.). Movie runs for 1 hour, 28 minutes. There will be a drawing for free Andrew’s movie tickets. Popcorn and water will be available for 50¢ each. No outside food or drink. Bring pillows and blankets to sit on.

Story Time at Hood River Library: Preschool Story Time at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays. Bilingual Storytime will be held Fridays at 5 p.m. beginning Feb. 24.

EXHIBITS

Through Feb. 26 — “Fresh Faces,” the February show at Columbia Art Gallery, sponsored by Timberline Lodge in celebration of its 75th year. The show features the gallery’s newly juried gallery artists and the work they have created in the past year in mediums including photography, ceramics, watercolor, oil, jewelry and sculpture. Artists include Keel Brightman, Mia Howell, Gwen Good, Scott Gray, Peggy Ohlson, Ann Scott and Jeff Stewart. March 2 — "West Coast Teapots 2012" opening reception at Columbia Art Gallery at the Center for the Arts, 6-8 p.m. The show features new teapots and tea bowls from 20 of the region's best ceramic artists. For more info visit www.columbiaarts.org. 

Through March — “Water: Tributaries of the Columbia,” a collection of watercolors by Mary Rollins, on display in the Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital Foundation display area (walk through main entrance and reception area and then to the left; ask at desk for directions, if desired). Art is available for purchase through the PHRMH Foundation office. (A percentage of proceeds benefits the Foundation.)

Raptor Interpretive Program, Daily (except holidays) at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum, 500 Discovery Drive in The Dalles. Six raptors and a corvid, all indigenous to the Gorge's waterways and woodlands, reside at the Discovery Center. These "avian educators" have injuries that prevent them from being returned to the wild, and are held under federal permit in collaboration with Jean Cypher, D.V.M., of the Rowena Wildlife Clinic. In the twice-daily programs, visitors learn how to identify them, what makes each bird unique and the role they play in the fragile web of life along the Columbia River. Feb. 24-25 — “Princess Slob,” a new musical for the whole family, 7 p.m. at Hood River Middle School’s auditorium, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Feb. 25. Book, music and lyrics written by Mark Steighner; directed by Rebecca Nederhiser. Tickets are $5 adults, $3 students and children; available at the door.

Feb. 22 — The Celilo Writing Group will meet at 6 p.m. in the third floor conference room of the Yasui Building above the Celilo Restaurant, 14 Oak St., Hood River. All are welcome. This week will feature Jim Drake’s blog at hoodrivernews.com.

Feb. 22 — Tree of Life film series, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Columbia Center for the Arts. An impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950s directed by Terrence Malick and starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. Tickets are $5 at the door. Rated PG-13.

Bring unwanted, excess or expired chemicals, cleaners, paint, farm equipment or automotive fluids, adhesives, etc. for proper disposal. Feb. 25 — Magic The Gathering game day at Hood River Hobbies, a free event, 1:30 p.m. Come play this popular trading card game with others at 110 Fourth St. in downtown Hood River. Game Day will be standard format so bring your own deck (pre-made decks are available for purchase if needed or are new to the game). Feb. 25 — Col. Wright’s campaign as mapped by topographer T. Koleski, 1:30 p.m. in the upstairs courtroom of the 1859 courthouse, 410 W. Second Place, The Dalles. Part of the Original Courthouse Regional History Forum Series. Dr. Mahlon Kriebel discusses the Col. Steptoe-Chief Vincent Battle and Col. Wright’s campaign of 1858 from Ft. Dalles to Cataldo using letters, field notes and maps made by Theodore Kolecki, topographer during the Wright campaign. Coffee and cookies will be served.

Feb. 25 — “The Chair Affair” Art Party & Sale, 6-9 p.m. at The Pines Tasting Room, to raise funds for Westside Elementary School’s Artist in Residency program. There will be a live auction featuring chair-inspired art by local artists as well as classroom pieces by students. Tickets are $30/single and $50/couple, available at Westside School and Waucoma Bookstore. This event is open to the public.

Feb. 26 — “An Afternoon with Steinbeck,” 2-4 p.m. at the Hood River County Library in the Jeanne Marie Gaulke Community Meeting Room, downstairs. Gorge-area actors will read passages from two of John Steinbeck's most beloved novels, "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Of Mice and Men."  Lynda Dallman will direct. Refreshments will be served. Feb. 27 — Marimba classes through Community Ed, Mondays through March 13 from 1-2 p.m. In this adult class, you will learn to play African-style marimba, developing rhythm and musical skills in a fun and supportive group environment. Feb. 28 — “Grow Your Bottom Line While Reducing Your Carbon Footprint,” 5:30-7 p.m. at Solstice Wood Fire Café, 415 W. Steuben, Bingen, Wash. Join Mt. Adams Chamber of Commerce for this evening workshop focused on the benefits of adopting more eco-friendly business practices. Feb. 29 — Ellesmere Island Expedition Slideshow, 7:30-9 p.m. at the Columbia Center for the Arts. Slideshow presentation of National Geographic Adventure of the Year 2012 Erik Boomer’s 1,485-mile circumnavigation of Ellesmere Island in Canada with fellow adventurer Jon Turk. Gorge Grown Food Network is  encouraging food entrepreneurs and anybody interested in launching a value-added food business here in the Gorge to attend. March 6 — Backcountry Film Festival, 6:30 p.m. at Springhouse Cellar Winery in Hood River. The nationally touring event features the work of grassroots filmmakers who tell compelling, visually spectacular stories of backcountry, human-powered recreation, adventure and environmental preservation. Funds raised through ticket sales ($10) and an auction and raffle will enable the nonprofit Educational Recreational Adventures to collaborate with The Next Door to offer snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, traditional archery, fly fishing and other outdoor skills and adventures to low-income youth in the Hood River area. March 9 — Classical Voice Recital fundraiser, 7 p.m. at the HR Middle School, 1602 May St. Meredith Holcomb, soprano, and Karen Eddleman, piano, will perform. $10 adult, $5 student, or $25 family suggested donation; $25 minimum per person donation to attend the recital and following reception. March 10 — GEM Health Care Reform Workshop, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Riverside Community Church, Fourth and State streets, HR. Sponsored by Gorge Ecumenical Ministries. This workshop will look at faith-based goals for health care reform, the moral and financial failings of the current system, the reasons behind rising costs and how insurance design impacts the number of uninsured. March 31 — Free Basic Disaster Life Support course, 1-5 p.m. at Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue, 1400 W. Eighth St., The Dalles, offered by the Oregon State Emergency Registry of Volunteers and Wasco County Medical Reserve Corps. Basic Disaster Life Support is a review of the all-hazards topics including natural and accidental human made events, traumatic and explosive events, nuclear and radiological events, biological events and chemical events.
