The Hood River Valley girls basketball team was fresh off a win over Sandy, where it looked like a team ready to skip the rebuilding phase and go hunting for a playoff spot.

That did not mean much to the Reynolds Raiders on Wednesday night at Vannet Court. While the Eagles sent out their usual young lineup, the Raiders used the experienced trio of Renee Tzeo, April Dobrinski and Rachel Scarpelli to roll to a 62-29 win.

“The bottom line is that they took it to us,” Eagles coach Phil Hukari said. “They are a good team that is well-coached with a lot of weapons.”

Scarpelli, Tzeo and Dobrinksi accounted for 40 of the Raiders of the points, with most of them coming in the first three quarters before Reynolds put in its second string for most of the fourth quarter.

It was another slow start that ultimately doomed the Eagles. HRV found itself down 20-2 at the end of the first quarter. After that point the closest they would get the rest of the way was 16, after Rachel Perry made it 24-8 with a short jumper with 3:20 to go before halftime. Perry had 8 of the Eagles’ 13 first-half points, and led the team with 14 on the game.

The also got 8 points from Audrey Mallon.

Scarpelli led the way for the Raiders with 19 points while Dobrinksi added 14 and Tzeo 7 points.

With the win the Raiders improved to 5-1 in league play, 11-3 overall, and stayed in second place in the Mt. Hood Conference standings.

“Things are going real well for us so far,” Raiders coach Robert Scarpelli said.

The loss drops the Eagles to 2-4 in league, 3-11 overall, and into a three-way tie for sixth place in the league standings.

After watching his team get beat soundly on both ends of the floor, Hukari sees Reynolds as the type of team that the Eagles want to become.

“They really attacked on both offense and defense,” he said. “We ultimately want to go in that direction.”

The Eagles now go on the road for a pair of difficult games.

They were scheduled to play at Centennial on Friday, and then travel to Central Catholic on Tuesday.

“We just have to get better each game,” Hukari said.

JV: The HRV JV team soundly defeated Reynolds on Wednesday, using a second-half surge to beat the Raiders 44-32.

After trailing by four at the half, HRV outscored Reynolds 30-16 the rest of the way for the win. The Eagles were led by 11 points apiece from Danika Smith, Alex Gifford and Kelli Elliott.

Freshmen: The HRV freshmen team picked up its second win in a row with a 26-23 victory over Reynolds. The Eagles were led by 14 points from Desiree Leon.
