Horizon golf improves both on and off the course

Since the start of its season, the Horizon golf team has lowered its team score from 411 to start the season to 368 in the last week.

And that’s not even its biggest achievement this season.

The Hawks were recently named the No. 1 academic golf team in the state by the Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All-State Awards.

The Hawks boast a combined 3.91 GPA. Four of the team’s five members sport 4.0 marks.

Horizon golf coach and Athletic Director Oscar Stenberg credited the team for staying on top of its schoolwork during a tough travel season that has seen the team spend days at a time away at tournaments in eastern Oregon.

“They know they are going to be gone a lot so they sit down and crank out the work,” he said.

The other schools in the top five academically were Triad,  Santiam, Salem Academy and Bandon.

“I’m just really proud of the boys,” Stenberg said.

On the course, the Hawks have also shown marked improvement from the beginning of the season.

Last Friday the Hawks finished second in a  small schools tournament, finishing with a score of 368, behind Enterprise at 313.

The Hawks finished first out of the other schools from their district.

However, the top team in the district, Echo, was not at the tournament, but they will face the Hawks at next week’s district tournament.

On Monday the Hawks wrapped up their regular season slate with a nine-hole tournament against the HRV JV team and The Dalles-Wahtonka JV team in the Dalles.

HRV’s Hunter Daily finished first with a score of 45, and right behind him came Horizon’s Philip Stenberg, Hayden Herring and Nate Boyden.

Stenberg finished with a 48, and Herring and Boyden tied with Robert Meyer of TDW with a 49.

The Hawks will travel to Wildhorse Golf Course in Pendleton on Monday for district championships.
