Eagle track flies into district

They may not have broken any records, but the Hood River Valley track and field team members still finished the regular season in strong fashion on Tuesday, with the HRV boys splitting with the David Douglas and Central Catholic and the HRV girls beating both schools.

The HRV boys beat David Douglas 83-59 and lost to Central Catholic 77-66. The HRV girls easily beat both Portland area schools, topping Central Catholic 93-47 and beating David Douglas 86-53.

With the final meet out of the way, the Eagles now set their sights on the Mount Hood Conference district championship meet next Monday and Tuesday at Mt. Hood Community College.

The Eagles got wins on the girls’ side from Erin Jones in the 3,000 meters, Lupe Santillan in the 300 meter low hurdles, the 1,600 meter relay team, Rachel Perry in the javelin, Amy Hay in the pole vault and two wins from Kari Hidle, in the long jump and triple jump.

On the boys’ side the Eagles got wins from Leo Castillo in the 3,000 meters, Stefan Zosa in the 110 high hurdles and high jump, Erik Lujano in the shot put and discus and Zak Flaming in the triple jump.

It was the final home meet for seniors Castillo Flaming, Zosa, Lujano, Hidle, Julio Avila David Warren,  Alex Van Slyke, Erick Nelson, Kylee Staughton, Rachael Mallon, Justine Campbell and  Brittany Edwards.

Notable season bests on the boys side included a time of 11.77 seconds for Jason Vanderslice in the 100 meters to finish fourth and a jump of 39-0 in the triple jump to finish second, Frank Zartler finishing third in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes 6.15 seconds Zosa's first place finish in the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 15.70, Lujano's first place throw of 124-5 in the discus, Van Slyke's time of 9:32.10 in the 3,000 meters and Steven Culpepper's time of 16.79 to finish fourth in the 110 high hurdles.

On the girls’ side, some season bests included times of 13.70 and 29.02 for Marlene Cervantes to finish fourth in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200 meters, respectively, a time of 59.23 for a second place finish for Lauren Lloyd in the 400 meters, a time of 63.04 for Alison Flaming for a fourth place finish in the 400 meters, a time of 5:22.82 and a second place finish for Jennifer Lucas in the 1500 meters, and Santillan's time of 50.99 in the 300 low hurdles.
