HRN REPORTS
May 10, 2008
The HRV boys lacrosse team locked up third place
in the Columbia league, and a state playoff spot, by beating
Grant 9-7 on Thursday.
The win means the Eagles will likely host a
first-round playoff game next game Friday.
HRV dominated virtually all aspects of the game
in the first half, allowing only one Grant goal while getting
out to a quick start on offense.
Peter Debbaut scored the first goal for HRV with
an assist from Eli Camero barely a minute into the game, and
Jacob Bohince followed five minutes later for a 2-0 HRV lead.
Camero and Bohince combined for three more goals
in the second quarter to give HRV a 5-1 lead at halftime.
Grant had four man-up opportunities in the first
half, by the HRV defensive unit of Jordan McHale, Paul Wanzek,
Mark Troxel, Cameron Kiyokawa and Justin Tolentino allowed them
to score on only one of the tries.
Grant began to climb back into the game in the
third quarter, cutting the lead to three goals by the end of the
period, and cut the gap to 8-6 with just over three minutes to
play.
HRV put the game away with 30 seconds to play
when Camero hit a wide-open Ian Bohince to give HRV enough
cushion.
HRV coach Mac Jackson credited Debbaut with
setting the tone for HRV and helping maintain the momentum in
the fourth by winning numerous falloffs and ground balls.
“Peter has established himself as one of the best
face-off men in the state, winning 70 to 80 percent of his
face-offs,” Jackson said. “He has a motor that never quits.
