The Hood River Valley boys lacrosse team locked up its playoff spot with a win earlier this week. That left them with just a little mop-up work to do with Cleveland on Thursday.

The Eagles hammered away at an overwhelmed Cleveland defense to win a 19-1 rout in the regular season finale for a team that is currently ranked No. 8 in the state and heads to the playoffs as the No. 3 seed in the Columbia League.

It also gave the HRV senior group of Anthony Walden, Mark Troxel, Jon Love, Cameron Kiyokawa, Peter Debbaut, Justin Tolentino, Henry Hunt, Eli Camero, Ted Ostrye, Max Watson, Kyle Donahue, Paul Wanzek, Will Kline and Alex Jubitz a nice parting gift in their final regular season game.

“This senior group that won tonight really stepped into the varsity team their senior year and proved themselves then,” Jackson said. “This is a group of kids that really love lacrosse.”

The Eagles wasted no time in dominating Cleveland, which finished the season with one win. The Eagles jumped to an 8-0 lead after the first quarter and then scored five more by halftime to put the game away. The seven goals that HRV got in the second half were icing on the cake for Jackson.

“It was nice to get an easy one,” he said. “It gave us a chance to move the ball around on offense.

Jackson has been impressed with the play of the team’s defense down the stretch, and thinks it will serve the team well in the playoffs.

“We’ve made some improvements on defense that should really help,” he said. “We’ve gotten back to the basics.”

The Eagles will host the Bend Lava Bears in the first round of the state playoffs at 7 p.m on Friday. The Lava Bears are the No. 2 seed from the High Desert League with a 5-8 overall record.

If they win, the Eagles will play at Tigard, the No. 1 team from the North Valley League, on Tuesday.
