Spring sports season
is winding down and playoff action is getting ready to ramp up,
that can only mean one thing ... time for another installment of
The Notebook.
We start first in the
lacrosse world, college lacrosse to be exact.
Former HRV lacrosse
player Ian Bohince is already showing that he can play at the
college level. Bohince has been the faceoff specialist for the
Division II Western Oregon club lacrosse team this season and
was named to the Pacific Northwest Lacrosse League all-league
team as a freshman. Bohince recently led the Wolves to the
national championship tournament of the Men’s Collegiate
Lacrosse Championship in Dallas, Texas. The No. 8 seeded Wolves
were scheduled to face No. 9 seed Harding in the first round on
Tuesday. If they won, they would face the tournament’s No. 1
seed, Westminster, today. With a loss they would move to the
consolation bracket and face either Fort Lewis or Southwestern.
Bohince finished the regular season with 34 goals and two
assists. The Wolves punched their first ticket to the national
championship tournament by beating Western Washington 10-9 in
overtime. A web feed of the tournament’s championship games will
be online at www.collegelax.us.

Speaking of lacrosse, the HRV girls lacrosse team finished its
first varsity season last week, and whether the Eagles won by 10
goals or lost by 10 goals at the end of every home game the
team came together for a chant to thank the officials, fans and
their opponents.
It’s a classy gesture
and a nice display of sportsmanship all around.
If memory serves they
even did it following an upset win over Grant earlier this year
in swirling snow. Speaking of that upset win, if you want to see
a narrated slideshow of the Eagles’ win over Grant, and the
conditions they had to go through to get it visit the sports
section of hoodrivernews.com and look under “More sports video”
later this week.
n
Speaking of girls lacrosse, former HRV lacrosse player Sarah
Hourston and the Pacific University Boxers also wrapped up their
season last week. Hourston, a junior, finished the season with
two ground balls collected in 11 games.
n
Former HRV track and cross-country runner Melissa Kauffman had a
successful first year in her collegiate career at Oregon State
this spring. At the Willamette Invitational on April 4, Kauffman
recorded her best finish of the season to win the C-section of
the 5,000 meters with a time of 18 minutes, 35 seconds.
At the Western Oregon
Twilight Invitational she ran an 18:43 to finish 13th in a field
of 28 runners in 5,000 meters.
n
Finally, for your trivia: The HRVHS baseball team returns to the
state playoffs this week, for the first time since 1999. Which
school(s) has the most baseball state championships at any level
in that time span?
A: The Dalles, Henley
and Regis have all won two state titles in that span. Regis
nearly made it three last year, but was beaten 3-2 by Burns in
the 3A state title game.
There is reason No.
