It
will be five times the fun for the HRV track and field team at
the 6A state championships in Eugene next week.
HRVHS athletes Leo Castillo, Rachel Perry, Kari Hidle, David
Warren and Lauren Lloyd will all be making the trip to Hayward
Field at the University of Oregon after qualifying at the Mount
Hood Conference district meet.
Castillo qualified for state for the second time by fending off
a tough field in the 3,000 meters to take first with a time of 8
minutes, 54.29 seconds.
Perry will make her second trip to state, but in a different
event than last year. After qualifying in the javelin last
season, Perry launched a toss of 39-3.75 in the shot put to
finish third and qualify for state based on distance.
Hidle, a senior, will be returning to state for the second time
after qualifying for the 4A state championship in the triple
jump as a freshman. This time around she will be going in the
long jump, were she finished with a leap of 16-8.75 to finish
second.
Warren posted a height of 13-0 in the pole vault, a height he
has consistently hit this season, and finished second. This will
be the first trip to state for the HRV senior.
Lloyd earned her first trip to state in rather spectacular
fashion, blowing by St. Mary’s Alexandra Jones as they entered
the final turn of the 800 meters, to finish first with a time of
2 minutes 14.49 seconds. That time took nearly 5 seconds off her
mark in the previous day’s preliminary meets and was the second
fastest time in the state in the 800 meters this year.
Lloyd and Jones ran well out in front of the field for much of
the race, and it looked like it would be a repeat of Tuesday’s
preliminary race for the most part as Jones stayed several paces
in front of Lloyd. But as they headed into the last 200 meters,
Lloyd found an extra gear, passed Jones and was never really
challenged down the stretch.
“I tried to just stay right behind the whole way and then for
last 100 meters to go as fast as I could,” Lloyd said after
accepting her medal for first place in the event. “I’m a big
competition person and I just want to go out and try as hard as
I can.”
HRV coach Caleb Sperry was glad to see his top performers of the
year keep up the pace in the district meet.
“I think we got about what we expected,” he said. “I’m excited
about the kids that we are taking (to state).”
Even though they did not qualify for state, several other Eagles
put up solid performances.
Stefan Zosa finished fourth in both the 110 meter high hurdles
and the high jump, he recorded a new personal best in the
hurdles with a time of 15.66 and equaled his previous best of
6-0 in the high jump.
In the shot put, Erik Lujano put up a season best throw of
44-2.25 to finish seventh against a field that included Ryan
Crouser of Gresham, who set a new state freshman record of
59-10.
Zak Flaming and his sister, Alison, also had strong days, with
Zak finishing fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 39-11 and
Alison finishing third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:22.85.
Other good showings included a sixth place finish by Kylee
Staughton in the 400 meters with a time 1:02.35, an eighth place
finish by Ashley Braniff in the 3,000 meters with a time of
11:17.76, an eighth place finish by Justine Campbell in the 300
low hurdles with a time of 50.51 and a sixth place finish for
Amy Hay in the pole vault with a height of 8-6.
As a team the Eagles finished sixth on the girls
side at the meet and seventh on the boys side; for the season
the HRV girls finished in fifth and the boys in seventh. Gresham
was the season champion on the girls side and Barlow on the boys
side.
