At the pace she is going, Lauren Lloyd will not have to wait long for the day when she wins state championship.

But Friday was not that day, as the HRV sophomore came up just short of a state title at the 6A state track and field championships finishing second in the 800 meters to Alexandra Jones of St. Mary’s.

Lloyd posted a time of 2 minutes 15.02 seconds, over two seconds faster than her time in the preliminaries, but it was not enough to beat Jones for the second time in as many weeks.

Lloyd caught Jones around the final turn in the Mount Hood Conference district championships and nearly did it again on Friday, before Jones pulled away in the final 20 meters.

Jones ran ahead of the pack for almost the entire race, with Lloyd hot on her heels. In the final lap they were both challenged by Bianca Martin of Westview, but Martin fell back to seventh by the time the race was done.

In the final stretch Lloyd and Jones ran virtually step-for-step before Jones finally pulled away to win with a time of 2:14.78.

Lloyd’s second place finish was the top result for the Eagles over the weekend and helped the HRV girls to a 17th place team finish. The HRV boys finished 28th overall.

Fellow HRV sophomore Rachel Perry also showed she may have a state title in her future by finishing third in the shot put.

Perry qualified in the shot, after being unable to make a return to state competition in the javelin, the event she qualified in last year.

Perry finished with a top throw of 40-9.75, which is a career best.

In the girls long jump, HRV’s Kari Hidle finished 11th overall with a jump of 16-03.

Hidle’s jump was just enough to edge out Tegan Clark of Jesuit who finished with a best jump of 16-2.75.

David Warren, the lone HRV qualifier to compete on Saturday, finished 16th after clearing a height of 13-0.
