Rachel
Perry and Lauren Lloyd both finished in second place in the 6A
state championships in Eugene earlier this month, establishing
themselves as two of Oregon’s elite track athletes.
After
last weekend, they can officially include themselves in that
category.
The pair
competed in the inaugural Oregon Elite Meet over the weekend at
Summit High School in Bend.
The meet
combines many of the top two finishers from every event across
all six size classifications in the state.
The meet
is the first of its kind in Oregon under the six-class system
and is the idea of Summit coach Dave Turnbull, who proposed it
as a way to truly settle who is best in the state.
It is
held on Summit’s new “Mondo”-style track – the same type of
surface the covered the Beijing Olympic track.
Perry
finished second in the shot-put to Alyssa Hanson of McMinnville
with a throw of 43-5.5, five inches off her career best.
In the
800-meter race, Lloyd finished fourth behind Chloe Steinbeck of
Southridge, Julia Fonk of Franklin and Alyssa O’Connor of
Summit, with a time of 2:15.11, a season-best time.
“The
800-field was one of the most competitive fields I’ve ever
seen,” HRV distance coach Kristen Uhler, who took Perry and
Lloyd to Bend, said of the race.
