Winds
are ripping through the Gorge and that means some of the area’s
best windsurfers are riding in pursuit of the Gorge Cup
championship.
The
third race in the series went off under near-perfect conditions
Saturday, with Bruce Peterson chasing down Chris Prior in the
final portion of the race to take the win in the race and the
Grand Masters classification.
Prior
took second overall, first in the masters class. Andrea Macke
took third overall; MacRae Wylde fourth and Tavis Perez fifth to
round out the top five overall.
In fleet
two, Jay Watermeyer took first and Aaron Cardwell second and
Alex Nielsen third in the juniors class.
In fleet
three, a pair of 12-year-olds, Ben Grodner and Fiona Wylde,
competed in the junior-two class, with Grodner winning and Wylde
taking second.
Peterson
currently holds the overall lead in the series with Prior close
behind. The next race in the series will be held July 11 at the
event site. The stakes will get even higher when the U.S.
Windsurfing Nationals come to Hood River July 23-26.
Participants are still able to register for the remaining Gorge
Cup races.

The July
11 race opens with a skippers meeting at 10 a.m. with racing
scheduled to begin around 10:30 a.m.
There
will be more windsurfing action in store this weekend at the
annual Windfest party at the event site. The event runs Saturday
and Sunday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. Sunday.
It will
feature gear demos, a swap meet and the always-popular Pray For
Wind Party.
