The Post
Canyon trails will be busy this weekend as over a hundred of
some of the top mountain bikers tackle a challenging course in
the Hood River Super D race.
Race
director Brandon Ontiveros said that close to a hundred riders
had registered as of Thursday, and that he was expecting the
total to reach around 125 when walk up registration finished
Friday.
The
lengthy course should prove to be a challenging one. Ontiveros
expects it take around 20 minutes for most of the pro riders to
finish and around 30-35 minutes for amateurs.
“This is
the steepest and most difficult Super D course on the West
Coast,” Ontiveros said. And what makes it that way? “It is very
steep, with a total of 3,000 feet of elevation and lots of hills
and climbs,” he said. “You are maxed out the whole way.”
Racing
will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a racer dropping on the course
every minute thereafter. Following the race, there will be an
awards ceremony at 2 p.m.
In
between lunch will be served for all finishing racers and
spectators. The lunch is free for racers and $7 for all
non-racers. The area around the finish line is good spot for
anyone wanting to get a good view of the racers.
There
are other areas further up the course, but they could be
congested and difficult to reach. To see directions to the race
area, and a map of the course, visit www.breakaway-events.net.
