Eagle game day: HRV football hosts Grants Pass

HRV (0-0, 6A Mount Hood Conference) vs. Grants Pass (0-0, 6A Southwest)

Time: 7 p.m.

Place: Henderson Stadium

This year it is the Grants Pass Cavemen making the long trip to open the season. Hood River Valley travelled to Grants Pass to start last year, and were trounced 34-7.

They might not have a long bus ride to contend with this year, but the Eagles will stay have to battle to hang with a powerful Grants Pass team.

The Cavemen suffered only one regular season lost last year, to South Medford, and advanced to the second round of the 6A state playoffs where they lost to Jesuit.

Expect the Eagles to have their hands full trying to contain the running and passing threat of GP quarterback Jordy Romick.

Meanwhile, HRV quarterback Sam Kopecky and the Eagle offense will be trying to make a better impression against the Cavemen than they did last year with only a single second half touchdown getting them on the board.

This will be the first game on the sidelines for new HRV coach Caleb Sperry as he tries to get the Eagles headed back towards the playoffs.
