HR wrestler finishes seventh at 189 pounds, Baker finishes 10th at 140
pounds
Lucas Mondragon placed seventh in the Cade Greco-Roman
category at the wrestling national championships this week, earning him
All-American status, one of only three Oregonians to do so.
Wrestling in the 189-pound weight class, Mondragon
stormed through his first four matches, beating Mark Cross of Maryland
4-1, 6-0, Patrick Blankebeker of Georgia, 2-1, 1-4, 2-1, Tim Hartwig of
Idaho 6-0, 2-1 and Joe Patricelli of Illinois 2-1, 1-1, 2-1.
In the fifth round Mondragon received a bye, and then
lost to eventual second-place finisher Jonathon Becker of New Jersey on a
first-round fall at :58. In his seventh match; Mondragon lost on a
technical fall (6-0, 6-0) to Max Huntley of Armed Forces.
In his eighth and final match, Mondragon recovered to
beat Hayden Bock of Missouri 4-1, 2-1.
Mondragon’s teammate, Sean Baker, finished in 10th
place in the 140-pound category, just outside the top eight for
All-American status.
Baker also ran through his first four matches without a
loss, topping Hayden Brock of Missouri 4-1, 2-1, Jake Potyraj of Michigan
5-8, 6-4, 801, Brode Hills of Iowa by a technical fall 7-0, 9-3, and Dayne
Swisher by technical fall 6-0, 7-1.
After a fifth-round bye, he fell to Justin Gonzales of
Colorado 6-0, 3-0, and Kalvin York or Wisconsin by technical fall 7-0,
6-0.
The freestyle portion of the competition got underway yesterday
morning.
