BEAVERTON - Hood River Valley’s boys soccer
run in the Class 6A state playoffs ended Saturday afternoon with
a 4-1 loss to the No.1 ranked Westview Wildcats.
The Eagles fell behind 2-1 by halftime and
never were able to get their offense flowing against an
increasingly stingy Westview defense.
“Our plan was to score more goals than Hood
River,” Westview coach Jim Lekas said. “We knew they had a high
octane offense.”
Both teams brought offensive fireworks
early by combining for three goals in the first six minutes.
Westview's Erik Hurtado opened the scoring
quickly by blasting a shot from the right side past HRV keeper
Nathan Ponce. The Eagles were able to quickly tie the match
though when Diego Diaz curled a free kick past the reach of
Westview keeper Alex Watson barely a minute later.
The tie would not last long as the
Wildcats' Ryan Herrera drove through the HRV defense and had the
ball bounce over Ponce's head, allowing him an easy finish for a
2-1 lead.
HRV appeared to tie the game again in the
28th minute when Felipe Heredia put a shot past
Watson, only to have it called back for offsides.
The Wildcats broke through again in the 54th
minute when Adam Irinaga headed the ball to Herrera who knocked
it in from point-blank range. Hurtado added an insurance goal in
the 65th minute to put the game out of reach.
“They're a dynamic team,” Eagle Coach Doug
Beveridge said of the Wildcats. “We just didn't have the horses
to run with them.
“It's always disappointing to lose, but if
you lose to the No.1 team in the state, I can handle that,” he
said.
