State grant means district can break ground this fall

Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District was recently awarded a $230,000 grant through Oregon State Parks, which will be used to build a much-needed community park in Odell.

After applying for but not receiving a similar grant last year, HRVPRD will use the funds, which come from state lottery dollars, to include in the 1.84-acre park a sheltered sports court, play structures, an open play field, a fitness walking path, picnic areas, tables, benches and other park amenities.

If all goes as planned, work on the park will begin in the fall, and by this time next year what is now a large, unused field will be a colorful park ready to be utilized by the surrounding community.

HRVPRD Director Lori Stirn explained that a public park in Odell is long overdue.

“The HRVPRD updated its master plan in 2005,” Stirn said. “When we did, it became very apparent there was a shortage of park and open space in Odell. The park district put that as a priority.”

Since then HRVPRD has worked with two developers in Odell with adjoining open properties off of Maple Road. Owners of Anna Acres and McCormic developments both agreed to donate the land, totaling nearly two acres, to the district for a new park.

To get an idea of what the community wanted in a park, the district held a series of public meetings starting last fall. Kids, parents and property owners alike attended the meetings and gave their input on what they would and would not like to see in the new park. HRVPRD took in to account as many comments and ideas as it could in developing the park’s overall design, which will be presented to the public later this month at a community picnic organized at the park property.

To celebrate the upcoming park development HRVPRD, in collaboration with Nuestra Comunidad Sana, a Program of The Next Door Inc., will host a community picnic Aug. 28, 4-8 p.m. Location is Maple Road, off Odell Highway. Games will be coordinated and a free barbecue will be provided from 5:30-7 p.m.

The general park design will be on display for the community.
