Sept. 3 — Pacific Northwest Plein Air 2010 show opens at Columbia Art Gallery, with an artists reception beginning at 6 p.m. The show features the works of 40 artists.

Sept. 3 — Talk by White Salmon artist John Mayo, 7 p.m. at SOLO Gallery. Mayo’s works from a six-month artist residency in Australia will be on exhibit beginning First Friday, 5-8 p.m. The gallery is located at 512 Cascade Ave.

Raptor Interpretive Program, Monday through Friday (except holidays) at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum, 500 Discovery Drive in The Dalles. Sept. 9-12, 16-17 — “The Year of Magical Thinking,” a one-woman show featuring author Joan Didion, 7:30 p.m. at CAST Theatre, with a 2 p.m. matinee Sept. 12.

 Sept. 4 — First Saturday Breakfast at Lyle Lions Community Center in Lyle, Wash., 7-10 a.m. Breakfasts are $5 ($2 for ages 12 and under) and include ham and eggs, omelets, all-you-can-eat pancakes with blueberry compote, OJ and coffee. Proceeds go to fund Lions projects.

Sept. 4 — Leos Club bottle/can collection, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Rosauers parking lot near the Lions newspaper recycling trailer. Monies raised from return deposit containers will be donated to various nonprofit groups in the community. Containers do not need to be sorted.

Sept. 4 — “The Collector: David Douglas and the Natural History of the Northwest,” a program with slideshow at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, 1 p.m.

Spokane-based author Jack Nisbet will present the program based on his new book of the same name, which won the 2010 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Book of the Year award. It traces early Scottish naturalist David Douglas’ adventures through the Columbia Gorge between 1824-34.

Sept. 8 — Smoking Cessation Series begins, an 11-session series offered by Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, 5:30-7 p.m. Sept. 8, 13, 4, 15, 16, 22, 29 and Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27.

Learn a systematic approach to quitting through behavior modification techniques, coping skills, social support and more.

Sept. 9 — Volunteer work party at Beacon Rock State Park, to work on the new Hardy ridge Connector Trail. No prior experience necessary. Washington Trails Association provides tools and instruction. Sept. 9 — Adventures in Aging, the first in a series of workshops designed to help people of all ages embrace aging, offered twice at Columbia Gorge Community College Indian Creek Campus, room 102, Hood River, from noon to 1:30 p.m. or 6:30-8 p.m.

Gary and Barbara Young will address topics such as attitude, health, hobbies, volunteer opportunities and family relationships, and share their adventures thus far in embracing aging. To register, call Community Ed at 541-386-2055.

Sept. 9 — The Dalles Kiwanis Club Steak Feed, 5-7 p.m. at Sorosis Park in The Dalles. The $15 ticket buys an 8-ounce rib eye steak, baked potato, coleslaw, roll, dessert and drink. Children 12 and under accompanied by adults may have free hot dog, baked potato, dessert and drink. Dufur Boys will provide entertainment.

Sept. 9 — “Plants, Animals and Hikes in Denali National Park,” a talk and slide show by naturalist, teacher and photographer Paul Slichter at the September meeting of the Native Plant Society of Oregon, 7 p.m. at Columbia Gorge Community College The Dalles campus, in the board room of Building 1.

Sept. 10 — “Seniors Got Talent” auditions, 2-6 p.m. at Hood River Valley Adult Center. Top three finalists will compete in Salem on Sept. 18. Prizes: First, $250; second, $100; third, $50. Call to schedule audition: 541-386-2060.

Sept. 10-12 — Cemetery Tales 2010, a community event combining heritage with dynamic first-person monologues of people who are buried at Idlewilde Cemetery, sponsored by The History Museum of Hood River County.

Tours stage at Hood River Valley Adult Center, with performances taking place in Idlewilde Cemetery. Tickets are $15 per person.

Sept. 11 — Vino & Fido, a benefit for Hood River’s Adopt A Dog program, noon to 5 p.m. at Wy’East Vineyards Tasting Room and Patio, 3189 Highway 35. there will be all sorts of tail-wagging activities including doggie diving, scavenger hunt, obstacle course, costume contest and more. Proceeds from sales of bottled wine and a raffle will be donated to Adopt A Dog.

Sept. 14 — Diabetic Education Series, a series of classes to educate and support those with diabetes, offered by Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, 5:30-8 p.m. Sept. 14, 16 and 21.

Registration is required and includes a one-hour private consultation. Insurance often covers the cost; scholarships available. A referral by health care provider is required.

Sept. 16 — Second annual United Way Hawaiian Luau Kick-off Party, 5:30-9 p.m. at Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum, 1600 Museum Road in Hood River.

The event will feature authentic Hawaiian cuisine, silent and live auctions, music by concert rock violinist Aaron Meyer and Hawaiian dancers.

 Sept. 21 — “Snoring: A Silent Killer?” a free community forum offered by Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the hospital’s education center.

Respiratory therapist Al Cady, himself a former sleep disorder sufferer, will explain common sleep problems, the latest treatment options and more. A screening test is offered to participants at the end of the class to help determine the need to further investigate symptoms.

Sept. 23 — Community Care Forum, sponsored by Infinity Rehab, 3-5 p.m. at the Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River.

All Gorge-area healthcare and elder care workers are encouraged to come to this educational networking event that is free to the general public.

The guest speaker will be Dr. David Russo, who will be presenting on low back pain as well as the elderly.
