ON STAGE

May 9-10, 16-18, 23-24 — “Off the Map,” a play by Joan Ackerman, at the Columbia Center for the Arts.

Serving as narrator, Bo sifts through the memories of an unusual childhood spent in the wilds of northern New Mexico.

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. all dates except May 18, which has a 2 p.m. matinee. Ticket prices are $15 general; $10 students and seniors.

EXHIBITS

“100 Years — 100 Things,” a themed exhibit at The History Museum of Hood River County to honor the county’s Centennial Celebration. The show features 100 artifacts that are 100 years old or older.

The museum has new hours for 2008:

April and October — open daily 1 to 5 p.m.

May through September — 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Admission is free; however, donations are accepted and help with the ongoing outreach and archive preservation that is vital to the museum, and its mission to the community.

Through May 30 — Oil paintings by Gianna Scannell, at the Hood River County Library.

Through June 3 — Works on paper by Melinda Hannigan, at Solo Gallery, 512 Cascade St., Hood River

Through June 1 — “Common Ground,” at Columbia Art Gallery. The show features the works of painters Eric Jacobsen and Judith Cunningham and clay artists Boni and David Deal.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

May 6 — “Your Best Face Forward: Skin Management Options,” a free community forum and part of the Women’s Speaker Series offered at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, 5:30-7 p.m. at the Education Center. Register through Hood River Community Education, 386-2055.

May 10 — Hazardous Waste Collection, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hood River Garbage, 3440 Guignard Drive. Hazardous wastes include oil-based paints and solvents, drain and oven cleaners, pool chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, antifreeze, household cleaners, household batteries, art and hobby chemicals, fluorescent lamps and ballasts. Do not bring empty aerosol cans, latex paint or motor oil. For more information call Tri-County Hazardous Waste at (541) 506-2636.

May 10 — “ROV: Ride around Our Valley,” a free public bike ride, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Hood River. The route is mostly on low-traffic back roads and though the entire route is 48 miles, the ride can be tailored to any length desired. To view the route visit www.hrvrc.org.

May 10 — Wildlife habitat tour, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Join U.S. Fish and Wildlife biologists Jeremy Thompson and Jason Seals and the Hood River Watershed Group in the valley’s aquatic and terrestrial wildlife habitats. May 10 — The Spring Fling, a buffet lunch and fashion show for all moms, daughters and girlfriends, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Best Western Hood River Inn, Gorge Room. Presented by Soroptimist International of Hood River. Tickets are $18 each or two for $30, and are available at Waucoma Bookstore, from Soroptimist members and participating stores: Ananas Boutique, Doug’s Sports, Flow Yoga, Outside Baby, Ruddy Duck, Shortt Supply and the Wearhouse.

May 10 — House concert featuring JB Eckl, musician, songwriter and producer for Santana, WAR and many others, 7:30 p.m. at the home of Michael and Jana Hannigan. There is a $10-15 suggested donation and refreshments are provided.

May 11 — Upper Valley Lions Community Breakfast, 7-11 a.m. at the Parkdale Community Center in the downstairs dining area. All-you-can-eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, applesauce, apple juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. The cost for adults is $5; children $3. In honor of Mother’s Day, mothers eat free at this final Upper Valley Lionsbreakfast of the season. All proceeds go toward Lions projects throughout the community.

May 12 — “Generous Gorge hair and fund-raiser,” 2-7 p.m. at Uptown Salon, Essential Style, Capriccio Salon and Salon Visio, all in Hood River. Stylists from the four salons will donate their services to cut the hair of anyone donating clean, dry, unbleached hair that is 10 inches or longer, to be donated to Locks of Love.

May 12-13 — Columbia Gorge Sinfonietta season finale concert, 7:30 p.m. both days, in the Bowe Theatre at Hood River Valley High School. The Sinfonietta will be joined for this concert by Voci, a women’s choir, and the Columbia Gorge Men’s Chorus. All three groups are directed by Mark Steighner. There is no admission charge but donations are welcome.

May 13 — Hood River PubTalk, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at White Buffalo Wines, 4040 Westcliff Drive. May 14 — One Stop Service Shopping in Cascade Locks, 2-4 p.m. at city hall, 140 S.E. WaNaPa Lane. Services offered include the food bank, job search, veterans assistance, mobile health unit and more. For more information contact JoAnn Wittenberg, (541) 374-8492.

May 15 — American Red Cross Blood Drive, 1-6 p.m. at the LDS Church, 18th and May streets in Hood River. For more information contact Linda Frizzell, (541) 352-6333.

May 16 — Columbia Gorge Lions bingo, 6 p.m. (early bird) and 7 p.m. (regular game) in the Cascade Locks City Hall gym, 140 S.E. WaNaPa St. Proceeds benefit Lions community projects.

May 17 — Mosier Community Day, 9 a.m. at Rock Creek Park in Mosier. Learn about native plants and the removal of invasives from local botanist Mike Igo. Bring heavy gloves and garden tools. For more info contact Kathy, (541) 400-0124.

May 17 — Waterfront Community Park planting session, 9 a.m. at the Hood River waterfront. Volunteers are invited to help plant 3,000 trees and plants.

May 17 — Fifth annual Military Full Disclosure and Conscientious Objection Workshop for you, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hood River County Library Jean Marie Gaulke memorial meeting room, downstairs. The workshop is appropriate for ages 14-25, including females, and is sponsored by Columbia River Fellowship for Peace.

May 17 — Map and Compass Exploration for Kids, part of the Hood River Watershed Group’s 2008 Educational Field Series, noon to 4 p.m. at Hood River Valley High School. Recommended for ages 12 and up. May 21 — Columbia Land Trust open house, 5-8 p.m. at its Hood River office (upstairs from Double Mountain Brewery). This event will share information about private, voluntary land conservation in the east Cascades on both sides of the Columbia River.

May 24 — Free Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Workshop, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Columbia River Keeper Office in Hood River. Training day will include on-the-water sampling of E. coli, pH, oxygen, turbidity, temperature and conductivity using Oregon Deptartment of Environmental Quality equipment and methods.

May 31 — “Sun-Splashed and Wind-Washed” Garden Tour, offered by the Wasco County Master Gardeners with assistance from the Central Gorge Master Gardeners in the Hood River area, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour features five gardens situated around the “bowl” of The Dalles.

Tickets are $10 and are available in advance at Klindt’s Booksellers in The Dalles and Waucoma Bookstore in Hood River, or at each garden on the day of the tour.

June 7 — Parkdale Garden Club 60th Anniversary Tea, 1-4 p.m. at Parkdale Grange, 7375 Clear Creek Road. Celebrat the club’s 60th anniversary and wind up the 2008 Garden Week with a tea and ice cream social. Bring your favorite tea cup, if desired. More more info contact Mary Lou, 352-7742.

AT THE LIBRARY

Wednesdays and Thursdays — Story Time

10:30-10:50 a.m. — Itsy Bitsy Story Time: This is for toddlers up to age 3 who like to wiggle, dance, listen to stories, then wiggle some more. Parent or guardian must accompany child(ren).

11-11:30 a.m. — Big Kids Story Time: This is for kids aged 3-6 to have fun, sing songs and enjoy stories. A creative craft follows story time.
