Wal-Mart `crisis'

To the editor and everyone else who loves Hood River:

We are facing a crisis. If you think an Indian Casino would be a disaster for Hood River, consider this: Wal-Mart is about to receive permission to build a new superstore on Country Club Road. The main objective is to add a grocery department. We do not need another grocery store in Hood River.

My fear is if Wal-Mart succeeds with their building plans, then either Rosauers or Safeway will be forced out of business by a predatory competitor and there will be two huge vacant buildings. Both Safeway and Rosauers have demonstrated their commitment to Hood River. Rosauers particularly by making a recent big investment in a beautiful new store and Safeway by their reasonable marketing strategy. They are sufficiently competitive for us. Time is of the essence; please call, write, e-mail, or button hole your county commissioners and tell them how you feel. They will decide if Wal-Mart gets a permit.
