'Fat Cat' vote

I wish I could share Republican party boss Karen Minnis' pride in Rep. Patti Smith's performance (Our Readers Write, Sept. 5) but we should note that the Dist. 56 representative voted to cut the capital gains tax and return the entire kicker, mostly benefiting wealthier citizens and corporations.

Also, Smith supported Measure 7 (the ill-fated "takings" measure) which could have cost state and local governments millions. Minnis' contention that Smith "restored funding" becomes ludicrous in this context. Republicans have consistently blocked the governor's attempts to properly fund education, health and other services for at-risk Oregonians.

And the "legislative committee" designed to oversee the Gorge Commission merely adds another layer of bureaucracy -- this was a sop to anti-Gorge Commission folks, rather than reasonable statecraft.

Finally, I am curious about the Oregon Women's Initiative (a rather well-kept secret) and wonder exactly how it will help women, families and children. These groups (like men) need adequately funded child care, cheaper prescription drugs, elder care, etc., rather than feminist-sounding rhetoric.

Some have claimed that female politicans will be more compassionate than their male counterparts, but the record of Smith/Minnis contradicts. They voted with the fat cats.
