Author signing at Waucoma
Author Kathryne Ann Kinsey will be at Waucoma Bookstore Saturday for a signing of her new book, “Edelweiss.” The signing begins at 2 p.m.
“Edelweiss” is an historical novel about a family’s journey in search of a better life that led them from Ohio to Hood River in the early 1900s. The story opens with the unsuccessful struggle of a young woman, Laura Everett, to regain her health after giving birth in Fairview, Ore. The narrative then flashes back 30 years and the rest of the story is about the intertwining of lives and events that lead up to Laura’s death.
The story is based on true events that Kinsey discovered when she began researching her father’s family at a small historical library in Ohio five years ago. The main character, Laura, is Kinsey’s grandmother who dies after giving birth to her father, Maurice Everett Kinsey.
Many of the main characters in the story have strong ties to Hood River; Laura is buried next to other family members in the Kinsey family plot in Idlewilde Cemetery. Kinsey’s father and mother were raised in Hood River and her mother’s family lived in Hood River until the 1970s.
Kinsey now lives in North Carolina, but she will feel right at home when she comes to Hood River Saturday. As a child she spent many summers visiting her grandparents here, and fondly remembers swimming at the pool and picking apples in the Hood River Valley.
Waucoma Bookstore is located at 212 Oak Street.
