The anti-Wal-Mart ordinance recently passed by the City of Hood River is a fine piece of work. Designed to stop Wal-Mart from building a super center, the ordinance failed miserably. And where are all these commercial parcels within Hood River's city limits ready to be developed into mega-stores? Apparently they are few and far between given Wal-Mart's recent land grab at Hood River's door step.
If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would suggest that the limit to commercial building size was intended to limit Wal-Mart's competition. And with the county soon to follow in the city's foot print, Wal-Mart's future in the community is indeed bright.
The next question for Hood River is what to do with all that vacant retail space once the old Wal-Mart is vacated and either Safeway or Rosauers is forced to close due to lost grocery sales.
One good reason why the city's foot-print ordinance was such a bad idea; it didn't work. Keeping it on the books isn't going to improve the situation.
