Windfest scheduled this weekend
Stop by the Hood River Event Site this weekend to help the Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association and various local businesses celebrate Windfest. The eighth-annual party/ fundraiser will begin Friday at the Hood River Expo Center with music, food and a beer garden from 6-8:30 p.m. Up next is the Pray for Wind party from 7 p.m. to midnight on Saturday. The party, sponsored by Full Sail, the Hood River County Chamber of Commerce and Windsurfing Magazine, will feature raffles, an auction and music by KatzenJammer, Blue Trick and The Grand Simple. There will also be food and music. Tickets will be sold in advance at Big Winds, Windance and Windwing for $10. Admission at the door will be $12 for adults and $8 for students. * Also part of Windfest 2002 will be the Gorge Sport Fin clinic, a “Guaranteed Learn to Windsurf” clinic and a Start Windsurfing clinic. A gear swap meet will also take place Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. across from the Event Site.
Indian Creek trio takes third place
Showing their strength in numbers, a team of four local ladies traveled to The Dalles Country Club last week to compete in the 20th annual “Sasquatch 4’s” golf tournament. Sally Walker, Darlene Roberts, Jo Smith and Barb Zeller finished third out of 20 teams with a 265 net score shot in 36-hole team play. The tournament featured a best-ball format.
* Sara Starnes shot a 28.5 at last Thursday’s Day’s Play to win the game of “T’s and F’s,” which counts only the holes that start with T or F to make up a nine-hole round. Irene Kiyokawa shot a 29.5 for second and was followed by Jo Smith in third with a 30, and Beth Orgain in fourth with 33.5.
Big Winds demo held this weekend
Big Winds, the local windsurfing and kiteboarding shop located at 207 Front St. in downtown Hood River, will demo all of its 2002 gear at Windfest this Saturday and Sunday. Boards from F2, JP, Maui Project, Mistral and Naish, and sails from Naish, Neil Pryde, North and Sailworks. Visit the Big Winds tent at the Event Site from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and test drive the greatest equipment available. Call 386-6086 for more information.
Windsurfing lessons in Hood River
Hood River Parks and Recreation and the Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association are teaming up to offer quality, affordable youth windsurfing lessons this summer. Led by head instructor Heather Laurance and two assistants, the classes will take place Monday through Thursday beginning July 8 and continuing through mid-August. For only $40, Gorge-area kids ages 10-18 can enjoy four three-hour instruction sessions plus gear. Kids can sign up for as many sessions as they would like. Call 386-1303 for details.
River Track Club looking for runners
Youth runners who would like to become part of the Portland area’s best youth track-and-field organization are invited to turn out for the summer season. The outdoor track and field season will conclude in March, and the cross-country season runs August through November. An indoor season is also offered December through February.
