FREIDA "FRITZ" PAASCH BARNES

Freida "Fritz" Paasch Barnes, a Hood River, Ore., resident, died March 4, 2002 at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. She was 85 years of age.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Anderson's Tribute Center.

Freida "Fritz" Barnes was born in Hood River, Ore., November 18, 1916 to Fred and Mary Altman Paasch. She grew up along with four sisters and one brother in a pioneer family in Hood River Valley. She left the valley as a young woman to work in Seattle, Wash.

Fritz met he husband, Terry Barnes, also of Hood River at her brother's wedding. They were married March 31, 1940, in Seattle, Wash. She and her husband lived in Port Orchard, Wash., where he was employed at the Bremerton Shipyards. Their two sons, Mike and Gary were born in Port Orchard.

The family returned to the Hood River Valley in 1947 where they raised their family and became involved in community life. Fritz and Terry enjoyed Square Dancing and were members for several years of the Wy'east Whirlers. They enjoyed camping and the outdoors. Fritz assisted her husband in cooking for Crag Rat outings.

Terry was a longtime volunteer of the West Side fire department and Fritz helped with many activities over the years. During the fall, she packed fruit for Duckwall-Pooley and others. Following her husband's death in 1970, she returned to school and completed her education, receiving and associates degree from Lane Community College.

In her spare time Fritz volunteered as a greeter for the Hood River Chamber of Commerce and acted as a docent for the Historical Museum. She traveled extensively. In 1977 she took part in the Bingen, Wash., "sister city" trip to Bingen, Germany.

Throughout her life, Fritz enjoyed gardening and sewing and had a great love for nature, particularly birds. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed. Survivors include her sons, Mike Barnes of Shippeville, Penn., and Gary Barnes of Vancouver, WA; two sisters, Ann Parsons of Tumwater, Wash., and Evelyn Kotter of Clarksville, Ark., grandchildren Cheryl Adcock, Terri Jones and Andrew Barnes and great grandchildren Ben and Justin Adcock and Liam Barnes.

TERESA J. MURRAY

Teresa Joan Murray, a Hood River, Ore., resident died March 5, 2002, at her residence. She was 30 years of age.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Parkdale Baptist Church where she was a member.

Teresa Joan Murray was born June 8, 1971 in Hood River, to John and Donna Green Murray. She was raised and educated in Hood River, graduating from Hood River Valley High School in 1992. Teresa enjoyed attending Special Olympics events, bowling, swimming, horseback riding, potlucks, collecting Barney videos and shopping with her sister. She was also a member of the Hood River Social Club.

Her mother, Donna Murray of Hood River; her brother, Victor Hobbs of Salem, Ore.; her sister, Carol Daniel of Cascade Locks, Ore., and her aunt, Gertrude Reece of Darrington, Wash., survive her. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Her father preceded her in death in 2000.

DOLORES MAE HOFFMAN

Dolores Mae Hoffman died Saturday March 2, 2002, at her home in The Dalles, Ore. She was 68 years of age.

Mrs. Hoffman was born Nov. 15, 1933, to Earl and Margaret (Feuker) Klein in St. Cloud, Minn.

A memorial service was held on Friday, March 8, 2002, at The First Baptist Church of Hood River, with interment at Idlewild Cemetery.

EMMA JEAN NEFF

Emma Jean Neff, a former Hood River, Ore., resident, died March 9, 2002 at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Ore. She was 75 years of age.

Graveside services and vault interment will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Mt. View Cemetery.

Emma Jean Neff was born Sept. 18, 1926, in Winchester, Idaho to James and Erna (Puschmenn) Abercronbie. She was raised and educated in Dayville and Mitchell, Ore. She came to Hood River, Ore. in 1942, graduating from Hood River High School in 1945.

In 1948, she and Ralph Mentzler were married. He died in 1988. In 1990, she and Vernon Neff were married. He died in 1994. Emma Jean worked for many years as a secretary for the Hood River School District. She enjoyed reading, bowling, fishing, watching football, crocheting and needlework and being a member of TOPS. She moved to Portland in 1998.

Survivors include her son, Jim Mentzer of Neufield, NJ; two daughters, Beth McIntosh of Portland, and Lori Lynch of Canby, Ore.; a sister, Laura Young of Hood River; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Jeremy Mentzer, Krista McIntosh, Brianna Weigel and Stephanie Parker; three great grandchildren and three nieces, Carrie Weathers, Barbara Cooper and Mary Young.

Memorial contributions may be made to "First Books"; an organization dedicated to providing reading programs and books to underprivileged children or the American Diabetes Association c/o Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031.
