HOOD RIVER — With a spring break trip to the Arizona desert on the horizon, the HRV baseball team tried to get out of its early-season slump against Gladstone Friday at Traner Field.
But the allure of vacation may have gotten in the way of the business on the field — at least in the early innings — as HRV fell to 0-5 with a 14-10 loss.
Sophomore Heath Goin started and had trouble settling down, which resulted in an early 7-0 hole. But Jon Winnett came in and kept the game close with a stopgap effort in the middle innings. Zack Lucas finished out the game.
Winnett and Lucas also did some damage with their bats, knocking in two RBIs apiece during a mid-inning rally that put the Eagles within two at 8-6.
But the Gladstone bats weren’t done as the Gladiators regained their advantage in the fifth with four more runs.
HRV started its Arizona excursion Monday with a double-header against West Linn and Fairview high schools. Neither Winnett nor Goin pitched in the two contests, which resulted in losses of 12-7 and 12-0.
