HRV baseball drops fourth straight

PORTLAND — The midseason freefall continued for the HRV baseball team Friday as it lost a lopsided 10-0 decision to Central Catholic.

“We were in it for the first couple innings,” coach Gerry Flink said, “but three errors in the third just took the wind out of our sails.”

Heath Goin started the game but didn’t have his best stuff, and had to rely on his breaking ball.

Kyle Maurer and Jeremy Belcher recorded the only two hits for HRV, which had to face the Rams’ best pitcher, lefthander Ryan Gunderson.

“He was the best pitcher we’ve seen all season,” Flink said. “He kept us off balance and didn’t make any mistakes.”

HRV looked to halt its four-game slide Tuesday at Barlow, but results were not available at press time. The team takes on first-place Reynolds today and will close out at Parkrose Friday.

Flink chose to finish the season with his three senior starters, Jon Wall (Tuesday), Zack Lucas (Wednesday) and Danny Gilkerson (Friday).
