Hershey track meet sends locals to state

HOOD RIVER — Young track athletes from all over the Gorge raced into Henderson Stadium Tuesday for the first stage of the Hershey Track and Field series.

Boys and girls ages 9-14 competed in the annual competition for a chance to advance to the state competition to be held June 22 at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Local athletes moving on to state in the softball throw are Jessica Ribkoff (9-10 girls, 66’ 9”), Tasha Maletz (11-12 girls, 45’ 10”), McKenna Herring (13-14 girls, 78’ 7”), and Tyler White (13-14 boys, 172’ 0”).

In the standing long jump, Ribkoff (5’ 0.5”), Elijah Maletz (9-10 boys, 5’ 6.5”), David Warren (11-12 boys, 7’ 4.5”), Herring (7’ 0”), and Antonio Garcia (13-14 boys, 6’ 2”) will represent Hood River at state.

In the 9-10 girls 50 meter dash, Molly Sue Bryant of Mosier advanced with a time of 11.2 seconds, while brother Joe took first place in the 11-12 boys 100 meter dash with a time of 15.2 seconds.

Herring made it a three-bie by qualifying in the 100 meter dash at 15.2 seconds. Ribkoff also earned a clean sweep of her events, qualifying in the 200 meters at 38.7 seconds.

Jordy Mallon of Hood River qualified in the 9-10 boys 200 meters (36.3 sec.) and 400 meters (1:28), and will be joined by Jonathan Garcia (11-12 boys 200, 31.9 seconds), Gary Paasch (11-14 boys 200, 32.09 seconds).

Additional state qualifiers were Sierra Bentz (9-10 girls 400, 1:46), Kayla Lloyd (13-14 girls 800, 2:55; and 1,600, 6:49), and Antonio Garcia (13-14 boys 80, 2:48; and 1,600, 6:46).
