Charles Gross

On Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, while on his way to his winter home in Arizona, Charles Philip “Chuck” Gross, 80, passed away in Medford, Ore.

He was born to Bernice (Thayer) and Aubrey Gross in Los Angeles, Calif., on July 17, 1922. Chuck grew up in Los Angeles, graduating from University High School before being drafted into the Army during World War II.

While at a dance, he first met Florence Gill when she was 15 years old, in Millville, Calif. When his duty with the service ended, Chuck moved to Millville. He attended another dance, now four years later, danced with Florence but didn’t recognize her and on Sept. 9, 1947, Chuck and Florence were married at her parents’ home in Millville.

Chuck then completed two years of college, focusing on agriculture. They owned and operated a dairy and general store in Millville with his brother, Jack. Both Chuck’s and Jack’s families moved to Fossil, Ore., in 1961 where they purchased and operated a large cattle ranch.

In 1967, they relocated to Stevenson, Wash., and Chuck worked for Stevenson Co-Ply until his retirement in 1984. Chuck and Florence moved to Vancouver in 1987 but for 15 years they faithfully split their time between their northern home and their southern home in Apache Junction, Ariz.

For more than 30 years Chuck loved square dancing. He and Florence, his wife of 55 years, traveled all over the United States and Canada, square dancing in various festivals. He really enjoyed playing pool and shootin’ the breeze with his friends.

He enjoyed woodcarving and taught the craft to many people. Hunting, in his younger days, was something he was fond of. Chuck Gross was a man who loved life.

Surviving Mr. Gross are his wife, Florence I., of Vancouver, Wash; sons Flint C. Gross of Stevenson and George E. Gross and his wife, Sue, of Underwood, Wash., brother Jack Gross of Port Orford, Ore., and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Stevenson, with interment at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Hood River, Ore.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a charity of one’s choice in care of Gardner Funeral Home, P.O. Box 390 White Salmon, WA, 98672, who handled arrangements.
