Eva Lynch

Eva Mae Andross Lynch passed away Oct. 25, 2002, at St. Vincent hospital in Beaverton, Ore. She was 94 years old.

Eva was born in Hood River, Ore. on June 29, 1908. She married Luther Bryan (Slim) Lynch on Oct. 6, 1923. They were married 66 years before his death in 1989.

Eva spent most of her life in the Hood River County area. She was a 50-year member of the Parkdale Grange and was an active member of the Parkdale Garden Club until she moved to a retirement home in Beaverton, Ore. She liked to read and to work in her garden. She and Slim enjoyed fishing and traveling in their R.V., as well as rock hunting.

Eva Lynch was preceded in death by her husband, Slim, and her brother Gerald.

Eva is survived by sons Luther Bryan Lynch, Jr. and wife Jean of Grants Pass, Ore., Robert and wife Joan of Hood River, and Herbert and wife Marcella Lynch of Ninnekah, Okla.; daughter Irene and husband, Gene Teach of Tigard, Ore.; 13 grandchildren: Patrick Lynch, Teri Houghton, Tim Lynch, Nancy Romine, Kevin Lynch, Bryan Lynch, Amy May, Ron Teach, Mike Teach, Robert Teach, Rondell Lynch, Lucinda Baker and Barbara Parsley. She is also survived by 27 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Graveside memorial service for Eva Mae Lynch will be Sat., Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Parkdale Cemetery. Memorials may be made in her name to the Hood River County Library.

Claude Laughlin

Hood River resident Claude Levarn Laughlin died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at the Hood River Care Center. He was 88 years of age.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Tucker Road Baptist Church.

Claude was born June 3, 1914, to Earnest Theodore and Nancy Ellen (Pendergraft) Laughlin in Mountain, Mo. Mr. Laughlin was raised and educated in Missouri and Oklahoma. On Nov. 20, 1936, Claude married Reta May Hannon in Oolagah, Okla. Claude also lived in Oolagah and Talala, Okla., until moving to Hood River in 1943 where he has resided ever since. Some of Claude’s interests included hunting, fishing, farm animals and trips to the mountains.

Mr. Laughlin is survived by his wife, Reta May, of Hood River; daughter Loretta Laughlin of Hood River; sons Roland Laughlin and his wife, Carole, of Hood River, and Ernest Laughlin and his wife, Kay; grandchildren Linda, Sidney, David, Allan, Johnny, Ronald and JoAnn Brooks; step grandchildren Nathan and Michael Whitesell and April Goodnight and seven great-grandchildren.

Elden Smith

Elden Victor Smith, 78, of Meridian, Idaho, formerly from Hood River, Ore., passed away Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002.

Graveside services were Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Hood River, Ore. under the direction of the Relyea Funeral Chapel, Boise, Idaho.

Elden (Vic) was born Oct. 18, 1924, in Bellwood, Neb., to John E. (Lige) and Lillie Green Smith. (At home on the prairie. There were two sisters and a brother waiting for his arrival.) He moved to Missouri then Portland, Ore., then to Mt. Hood, Ore., where he attended school. He worked in the sawmill until he joined the Naval Reserves on Nov. 7, 1942. He served on the U.S.S. Birmingham until Nov. 14, 1945.

Vic married Bertha Karn in 1945. She passed away in 1979. Vic married Margene Wilcox in 1982. He worked at Neal Creek Lumber Company until sold; he retired from S.D.S. Lumber Company, Cascade Locks, Ore., as a shipping clerk.

Vic enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Margene of Meridian, Idaho; son, Dale Smith of Eugene, Ore.; two daughters, Jenny Villafana of Hood River, and Tina McCarrel of Eugene; five step-children; eight grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brothers, George of Port Orchard, Wash., and John of LaGrange, Ore.; and sisters, Melba Jean Blankenship of Hood River, and Pauline Rhyne of Santa Maria, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, four brothers, and four sisters.

Margie Porter

Margie L. Porter, a longtime Hood River, Ore., resident, died Oct. 26, 2002, in Prineville, Ore. She was 79 years of age.

Funeral services were held on Monday at the Hood River Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where she was a member. Concluding services and dedication of the grave will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at 12:30 p.m. at Mt. View Cemetery.

Margie was born Aug. 5, 1923, in Picher, Okla., to Roy and Carrie (Cadbury) Kaufman. She was raised and educated in Oklahoma coming to Hood River in 1966. Margie worked most of her life in the health care industry. She retired from Columbia Basin Nursing Home as kitchen supervisor. She enjoyed horses.

Survivors include three sons, Orville Francis of Chelsea, Okla., George Francis of Salem, Ore., and Charles Francis of Salt Lake City, Utah; two daughters, Karen Porter of Hood River, and Leah Esquivel of Gervais, Ore.; her brother, Ernest Kaufman of Prineville; and her sister, Edith Price of Indiana. Fifteen grandchildren, nine-great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.

Glenn Spaulding

Glenn E. Spaulding, 54, died on Oct. 19, 2002, at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Ore.

Glenn was born April 29, 1948, in San Diego, Calif.

He worked for Continental Telephone Co., White City, and for Hood River Sprint for 17 years.

He is survived by his father, Al Spaulding of Hood River, and his younger brother, Dana Spaulding, of Portland.

Peter Bell

Peter A. Bell of Husum, Wash., died on Oct. 22, 2002, on Cape Cod, Mass., at the age of 49.

Bell, who was originally from Keene, N.H., lived in Elsie and Jewell, Ore., for 16 years before moving to Husum. He was a carpenter.

He is survived by his parents, Merton and Ruth Bell of Cape Cod, his daughter, Jennifer Bell of Marlborough, N.H., his sister, Merriann Bell of Husum, and many, many friends, who rejoice at having known him.
