Crosswalk patrols return

The first day of school netted four Hood River motorists a ticket for failure to yield the right of way to pedestrians using marked crosswalks.

On Monday the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office held the first in a series of special enforcement actions to focus on crosswalk and seatbelt safety.

Sergeant Jesse Flem said within a two-hour period on Sept. 9 one driver was also cited for not wearing a seatbelt and another for failure to obey a stop sign.

However, Flem said during the special patrols, deputies also noticed foot travelers who were not being careful and alert when stepping into busy streets.

“Pedestrians shouldn’t just jump out in front of traffic thinking that cars are going to stop for them.
