From staff reports
Carol Knowles outlasted a field of 27 golfers on Aug. 12 and 19 to win the Hood River Women’s Golf Association Club Championship, held at Hood River Golf and Country Club.
Knowles’ second-round gross score of 97 helped her defeat Class A winner Clara Rice (pictured at right), as well as second-place finisher Carol Kuatt and third-place finisher Jo Smith.
Official scores were not available, but league coordinator Raye Hukari said the tournament was still very competitive.
Other winners included Class B winner Shirley Ekker, Class C winner Kaz Sumoge, and Class D winner Sunny Messinger.
Barb Zeller finished second in Class B, barely outlasting Cynthia Brocklesby, who took third. Marjorie Rosemont finished second in Class C, while Elaine Rife took third.
Vivian Foster and Adeline Schull rounded out the list winners, taking second and third, respectively, in the Class D division.
In the skills contests, Rice, Zeller, Sue Wiebalk and Mary Neville had the long drives on Aug. 12, while Smith, Carole Murphy, Hazel Bowe, and Neville came out ahead on Aug. 19.
Closest to Pin winners on Aug. 12 were Kuatt, Ekker and Wiebalk, and KP’s on Aug. 19 went to Knowles and Schull.
