New owners make changes at Christian bookstore

Books, music and software are gradually taking more shelf space at Columbia River Christian Supply Store, under new owners Michael and Lori Marques.

The couple purchased His Touch Christian Supply, 101 4th St., in September 2002 and are evolving the store into a “contemporary Christian” outlet for people of varied interests. Lori and Michael, who also own a store in The Dalles by the same name, want people of varied faiths and interests to feel welcome to visit.

“We are open to the community, regardless of where they are in their walk,” Michael said.

One way they’ve done that is to expand the musical selections, with CDs and tapes of a wide variety of what they call “Christian-based” rock and pop music. The store’s new Resound Media on-line listening station lets the customer listen to music before buying. The store also does extensive on-line ordering, meaning items ordered by 10 a.m. are usually ready the next day.

Michael and Lori said they are enjoying getting to know the community.

“We do have a lot of people who are coming in for the first time,” Lori said. “We try to have something for everybody.”

The shop still sells gifts, but is shifting to a greater emphasis on books, music, videos and software including materials used by home-schooling families. Much of the merchandise is aimed at people who are looking for ways to be better parents and communicating with spouses, she said.
